But why? pollyanna_n July 28 2003, 23:38:39 UTC
Why does Nougat need one? You haven't said which disease she has..

enquiring minds need to know.

Werribee is the best place for her by the way. They are great there. I wish I'd taken my cat there when she was ill. And she has hundreds of students to tend to her every need.

Good luck to both of you.

Well, you're the vet, but... niki_chan July 29 2003, 02:30:15 UTC
Anaemia, of the very severe kind. Some kind of bone marrow problem, she has a massively low red blood cell and platelet count (before the transfusion it was about 8%) She hasn't got feline AIDS or feline leukaemia so we're down to:

Best case scenario - an immune mediated disease of some kind
Medium - Myelodysplasia
worst - myelopthesis

There's also a fingers crossed for blood parasites but that's looking slimmer and slimmer.

I'm trying to decide whether to get a bone marrow biopsy (?) done tomorrow, or whether that would just be an exercise in working out exactly which of two fatal conditions she has. =sigh=. Ask again tomorrow and a different vet will no doubt have given me a different prognosis.

Don't give up on the Haemobartonella thing (it's been renamed too.. sigh, it's now Mycoplasma hemofelis and a few more).
Ask them to look at the UK Vet Record 152 (193-198) where a study was done demonstrating sensitivity on cytology at 0-11% and specificity at 84-99% (ie most of the positives are not positive on cytology), results suggesting that looking for the parasite using giemsa stained blood smears was of little value. PCR is more sensitive (however probably is not done yet in Australia).

My take home message from this was to basically treat for it anyway. They should have the Vet Record in the library.
The drugs for the parasite shouldn't hurt her in any way. It;s just an antibiotic

My dad asked the vet about that this morning and he seemed positive it wasn't the parasites. She's got a low platelet count and a low reticulocyte count and everything indicates a bone marrow disorder of some kind. I don't really want to do a bone marrow aspirate, so at the moment we're pretty much treating the best case diagnosis with cortisone and hoping.

I don't have a cat, so the best I can do is best wishes...
