I think there's a level of fetishism for that aesthetic reflected in steampunk. But I also think that the people who really embody that subculture have a DIY ethos as well. There's the jack and jane of all trades mythos intertwined with tinkering with a boiler. And this raises a conflict with consumerism. There's a respect and reverence for craftmanship. Where consumerism is synonymous with mass production and the commoditification of the object.

The hot topics will probably win in commodifying the steampunk aesthetic for the masses. Perhaps what we see with manifest destiny is the death of appreciating what we have at the hands of the lust for what we don't.

This is an idea worth pursuing... especially for the character I play. I suddenly had this image of the mountain deflating... Thank you Dan!
