Nice writing. I too enjoyed Oranges. I really enjoyed the mystery of the mother as well. I think it did a good job of summing up what my opinion of a Christian mother is. One who is always telling others to do what I do not what I say, very secretive but claims to be so open. So many times while reading this I thought of my grandmother, claims to be such an honorable woman but will condemn her own family for things she herself has done. Interesting how some people view the world!

I too really liked Oranges (a nice change from Mrs. Dalloway :)) I completely agree with the thought that Jeanette's mother was a little too much to handle. She was very hypocritical, as you mentioned witht the wine glass and the strength that women hold. I think the mother played a big role in the way that Jeanette decided to stick to her own beliefs and aspirations. Her mother's parenting skills were definitely one to be questioned however I believe that this help Jeanette realize that she should stick to what SHE believes in the same way that her mother barely visited her in the hospital due to her church responsabilities. I think that Jeanette's mother settled in life (when she married Jeanette's father who is never around) and I believe that that might play a role in her bitterness towards Jeanette's happiness whether she chooses to be with a man or a woman. I also agree with you on your point about the mother's confusion with her own life.. maybe she experiemented in her youth as well??
