Eh-eh-entertainment?..

Well, I'm awake at an ungodly time. (Yeah, 10 AM became an ungodly time for me as of lately; but in fact I had to wake up at 7, anyway, so I feel my point is justified.) Our New Year/Xmas holidays are finally over and the classes at the postgraduate have started again, and I decided that just for the sake of pertaining the remains of some kind of ( Read more... )

I know that's not because it's less violent - it's NOT less violent, which I think I mentioned above... Exactly as you say - and she says herself - because she sees clearly that it has "a message" that she likes to associate herself with. That's the whole point of my rant there. :) The thing is, the other two movies, Apocalypto AND Perfume are both SMART. They aren't JUST action movies. But they do posess more entertaining value, and thus - lo and behold! - they are cast out. Not good enough.

That's what bothers me. If you don't want to be boring (or preach something), you're risking being labeled "mass culture" and not getting any acclaim.

Apocalypto does have an Oscar nomination, BTW. :) I don't think it'll win, but it is nominated in at least one category, or I heard so.

That I know very well. :) It's just that box office gives me no trouble over this one: both Perfume and Apocalypto have fared better than expected, while Blood Diamond and Good Shepherd (I think; ain't sure about the last one) simply flopped.

It just annoys me, is all. Especially when I have to wake up early. :D

I haven't seen Apocalypto (yep, that violence thing), but the bottom line is that reviews, no matter what caliber the reviewer is, are still only reflections of opinions. They can try to be objective, but the fact is, they aren't--they are influenced by many various things, not the smallest of which is the reviewer's personal taste.

*sigh* I never noticed the violence. I swear. Maybe it's not because there's none, maybe it's only because I can't help but abstract from some things, doing so even involuntarily, and maybe I was too much concerned with Jaguar Paw's story and whether he's going to get back to his family in time (I knew he was, because I'd read spoilers, but somehow during the movie I totally forgot about that - and that's why I think the movie's real good). Or maybe that talk of violence IS a bit misleading. *sigh again ( ... )

Oh yes. People LOVE to pat themselves on the back. Seeing a "socially conscious" movie, thinking about it for five minutes, and going, "geee, what they did to those Africans was terrible!" is what people do nowadays instead of actually trying to help others. It seems to be rampant among pretentious critics and others in the entertainment industry. It annoys me, too.

You know, I'm at least consistent. I don't help anyone but my dearest and nearest, but I DON'T pretend to like such movies, either.

I think pretenciousness IS a sin. Really...
