Can I just ask how the song "Disturbia" goes with the movie "Confessions of a Shopaholic"? They are using it in the trailer and it just doesn't seem to fit.
So last week I didn't go to school AT ALL. Here's how that happened.
Monday - I took the day off to attend a good friend's stepfather's memorial service and help out with feeding them afterward at our church. It was a very nice service, and I think I was where I was supposed to be that day. This was also the day the ice storm began....
Tuesday - The university closed, which is rare enough in and of itself. The ice kept coming, and one by one tree branches began to fall. I live in a complex where there are a lot of big trees. It got to where five minutes didn't go by where I didn't hear a tree branch falling somewhere in the vicinity of my own apartment. One rather large one fell and hit my back stoop, sending a vibration through the house. I was freaked out but okay until the power went out. I considered staying there, but my brother had electricity, and I got worried that if I waited I wouldn't be able to get there, so I went ahead and packed up some stuff and Coco and I went to my brother's house. He also has a rather energetic puppy, so that made things interesting. Around 6 or so I got the alerts on my phone that school would be canceled Wednesday. We were good to go until about 10:30 or so, when the power went out there too. Thankfully, it came on again and stayed on at 5:30 the next morning.
Wednesday - I woke up at 5:30 when the power came back on, and then I went back to sleep. My brother and I watched movies, checked on my parents who had no power, and went to see what kind of damage there was around. We drove through my apartment complex and there were so many branches in the road it was just one lane that kind of wound around them. My power was still out. We went in search of groceries but there weren't many stores nearby that were open, so since none of our needs were pressing we just went home. There were a couple of blips, and the internet was out for most of the day, but we still had power and kept warm. With no word yet that school was canceled, I assumed they would make us go the next day.
Thursday - At about 5:00 am, I got the text message about school being cancelled both Thursday and Friday. At 5:30 am I got the phone call about it. Rather than going home to a place that still didn't have power, I opted to stay at my brother's for the day. My parents came to the house to store their freezer stuff (which wasn't going to last any longer in their still-powerless house) and we went to the grocery store and ate at Hardees. Roads were fine but the power outages and fallen branches were still disrupting everything. My brother and I decided to cook a hot meal for my parents Friday or Saturday. Yes, we did try to get them to come stay with my brother too, but with their two big dogs they didn't think that would work out. Internet was very spotty on this day but I managed to connect for a little while. Late Thursday night my friend Melissa called to say that the power was back on, so I determined that I would go home the next day.
Friday - I slept in, ate lunch, and then returned to my own place. It was good to be back, and I think Coco was glad to not have to battle the puppy anymore. I put my stuff away and finally reconnected to the Internet, I threw out the food that had gone bad in my freezer and refrigerator, and then I went to the grocery store. I went to the gymnastics meet with Jenni (there was still ice on the sidewalks but otherwise it wasn't bad). Late Friday the power came back on for my parents, but we still cooked them dinner the next day.
I did no homework in that time, mostly because I didn't bring that stuff with me to my brother's house. This might have been a bad idea. I recognize that I was quite fortunate to be able to have electricity when so many people didn't, though. The university was closed for a record four days. There are still people in the area who don't have power as of today. Even with the high temperatures Saturday there is still ice around in some places.
And there it is. My week.
