A/N: Sorry. This took a little longer to get out than I planned. And the next one might be a little slow too. I'm not sure, but I have a really busy week coming up. So, it will probably be next weekend before I get the next chapter out. Sorry in advance. This chapter was really fun to write. Maybe it's because my two favorite boys in News are in it so much *grin* But this is definitely a part I have been building up to. I think it's kind of obvious there's something going on if you payed attention to Tego in earlier chapters. Anyway, on with the story before I give anything away XD
My whole body felt frozen as I watched Tegoshi look at the red note before slipping it into my bag. I took a step back and then another before completely turning and walking away as quickly and quietly as I could. I wasn't sure if he had noticed me, because my brain was so clouded that I could barely think enough to even judge which direction I was headed in. Tegoshi? Was it really Tegoshi?
I sat at the table, the other guys around me. They were talking, acting normal. I was almost shaking in my seat. When I heard someone enter the room, I knew it was him. I looked up and caught Tegoshi's gaze. He looked away quickly before sitting down by Yamapi. Koyama was on my right side, then Masuda. Ryo was at the end of the far side of the table. Tegoshi's gaze moved around the table. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. When it landed back on me I jerked my eyes down to the table. He knew. He knew I'd seen him. He had to.
I don't really know what everyone was talking about, but every time I heard Tegoshi's voice I would snap my head up to look at him before quickly looking away. After the meeting was over I quickly retreated from the room and headed for my bag. Once there, alone, I stared at it for a long moment. Did I want to look? Did I want to see if he had left me a new note? If it was Tegoshi then there would be a new note. If there wasn't then it would mean it had been discovered by a third party. Somehow I thought I knew the answer. I turned out to be right. Before I could look I heard the door slide open and I glanced up to see Tegoshi walk in. He shut it behind him, his face deadly serious.
"Shige," he said, sounding a little uncertain himself. Was it really him? Or if not, then did he know everything now? I didn't know which I would prefer and which I was more afraid of. I couldn't move. I just stared at him as he moved closer.
"I saw the notes," he added slowly, making me almost one hundred percent certain it wasn't him. But that was scary in its own way. I moved away from my bag finally and sat in a chair, leaning my head forward to rest on my hands. I heard him walk over to me, but I didn't look up. A hand rested on my shoulder, squeezing lightly. "I guess you noticed, huh? I was looking for a pen. I lost mine somewhere and I thought you would definitely be prepared enough to have an extra. I knew you had been acting strange, and I thought the stack of red notes looked really suspicious. I looked at one and was so surprised."
Somehow I didn't believe he was just looking for a pen, but I didn't ask so I guess I won't know for sure. I took a slow, shaky breath. "It's not my fault." I felt cornered, like a giant finger was being pointed at me, calling me wrong. Like I had done something bad.
"Of course it's not your fault," Tegoshi sounded a little surprised, probably by the way I was acting. "Look, I'm not trying to judge you, Shige. I just wanted to help out. I've been thinking about it ever since I read the notes earlier. Putting the little pieces together in my mind. I knew something was up. Seeing the notes puts all the pieces together now."
I looked up at him. A thoughtful look was plastered on his face, as if he were thinking about all those pieces. "Like what?" I asked. "What do you know?"
He frowned slightly and moved to pull a chair closer to me. "I've just noticed a lot of things recently, seen a lot of things too, that I thought were odd. This makes all of that make sense. Like your necklace. I thought it was weird when I saw you wearing it because I ..." he paused, and I felt everything inside me sort of tense, a feeling I was becoming too accustomed to.
"You what?" I felt like Tegoshi had me on the edge of my seat. What did he know?
"I saw someone else with that necklace first. One morning I got here and saw one of the guys pull it out of his pocket. He was just looking at it and touching it, but when he noticed me he quickly put it away. The next day I saw you wearing a necklace that looked exactly the same. I heard you say it was a gift, so I thought maybe he just got it for you, no big deal. But then you kept playing with it. I thought you liked it a little too much to just be a present from a male friend."
I tried to digest everything Tegoshi was saying, but my mind kept going back to one thought. He'd seen him with the necklace? That meant he ...
"I know who is leaving you these notes, Shige. And I'm guessing that you don't yet."
"Who?" I felt the question leave my lips before I even had time to think about whether or not I wanted to hear in that moment, if I was ready to know. And if I wanted to hear it from Tegoshi.
Tegoshi leaned back in his chair and frowned. I wondered why he was hesitating, why he wouldn't just tell me if he knew. I deserved to know, right? "Are you sure you want to know?" He asked after a moment.
"What?" I was a little taken back by the question. Why wouldn't I want to know?
Leaning forward again, Tegoshi looked at me seriously. "I mean. Obviously you've been getting these letters for a while, right? And you seem like you're really into whatever is going on. You know he's one of us, right? One of the other guys in the band." He took a deep breath before continuing. "I'm just saying that even if you don't realize it, you've probably built up an expectation. There has to be one of us that you want it to be. Otherwise you could never get so attached to it. Do you get where I'm going with this?"
Tegoshi's logic startled me at first. I wanted to protest and opened my mouth to do so, but nothing came out. My mind kept repeating his question. Was there someone I wanted it to be?
"You didn't want it to be me, did you?" Tegoshi suddenly added, smirking as if amused. He scooted a little closer and ran his hand halfway up my leg. "I never thought about being someone's master, but if you really want I'll give it a try."
I felt my face heat up even though I could tell he was joking. Batting his hand away I scoffed. "No thank you." I sat, frustrated, for a moment. "I don't know," I finally responded. "I hadn't thought about whether or not there was someone in specific I thought it was, or wanted it to be. I mean I felt like I didn't know. I feel like I've been trying to find out. At least I was, but then I started to think maybe he would tell me soon."
Nodding slowly, Tegoshi waited only a moment before adding. "Maybe you just internally realized there was a specific person you were waiting for so you didn't need to look anymore. Now you're just waiting. Or maybe you're afraid it won't be the right person, so you stopped looking."
I sighed, thinking Tegoshi sure put a lot of thought into it. More than I had even. But maybe that was just the way he was. Or maybe it was because he knew who it was. Maybe he even thought I would be disappointed by the answer. I was kind of surprised by the way he was acting. I wouldn't have expected it from him. I would have thought he'd be a bit more immature about it, not helpful or thoughtful even. It almost felt weird to be sitting there discussing it with him so calmly. "Well, I guess I know it isn't you. I didn't feel disappointed by that."
Tegoshi pouted at my words before returning to his serious face and nodding. "Is there anyone else you have ruled out?"
"Masuda," I answered easily. "He didn't know something that was written in one of the letters, so I knew it wasn't him early on."
Laughing, Tegoshi reached up and pushed his bangs back. "There's no way it could have been Masuda. Sorry, that's just a weird thought. I can't imagine it. Masuda would have done things differently I'm sure. Plus, I really don't see him as that sort of dominant."
"I think you're putting too much thought into it." I frowned, thinking that I didn't really care what kind of boyfriend Masuda would be, since he wasn't the one writing the letters.
Tegoshi shrugged. "Well, then the other three are still options?" He asked.
"Yeah. They are I guess. You were until today."
Tegoshi nodded and smiled. "I'm glad you didn't rule me out, Shige. But I would never do something like this to you." He frowned, looking slightly angry. Maybe he really didn't agree with what the other guy had done. He dropped the frown after a second and continued, "If I wanted you I would have told you straight out. Or tried to seduce you first." He winked and smirked at me, making me wonder if Tegoshi wasn't put off at all by the fact that I was another man. He hadn't even mentioned it! I would have if I had been in his position, but in mine I definitely didn't want to bring it up. "So Koyama, Yamapi, and Ryo are the options left. I think you should think about it. Which one do you want it to be?"
I felt a sort of frustration build up in me at what he said. I tried to think about what I wanted, but it just made me feel scared. If I decided I wanted it to be one person, then I'd be even more disappointed if it wasn't them. I didn't know if I wanted to figure out who I would rather it be. "I don't want to Tegoshi. Can't you just tell me who it is?"
Sighing, Tegoshi crossed his arms. His eyes flashed in a way that made me feel a little suspicious. Did he not want to tell me for more than he was saying? Maybe it was who it was that upset him. But was he really just trying to look out for me? "Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you." I felt everything in my body tense, but before he said anything else the door opened.
"We've been looking for you two. What have you been doing all this time?" I looked up to see Yamapi staring at us. I felt my stomach twist with fear. What if he'd heard something we said? But that didn't actually seem likely. He didn't look freaked out or anything. Tegoshi smiled, and I almost wondered if he was pleased with the interruption. He jumped up and headed towards the door. My eyes moved back to Yamapi, but I didn't move right away. He was still an option, and Tegoshi's question was playing in my mind like a mantra. Was there one I wanted it to be more than the others? How would I feel if it turned out to be Yamapi? Ryo? Koyama?
