Release of the Lockerbie Bomber

Aug 20, 2009 18:59

I've set out to write this post a few times, only to stop when I felt my blood pressure approaching dangerous levels.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al-Megrahi was convicted of killing 270 people on board a Pan Am airplane over Lockerbie, Scotland. He has served 8 years of his minimum 27-year sentence for his role in the 1988 bombing of Flight 103.

He was released from prison today and allowed to return home. Because he's dying of cancer. And family is important to him. And he'd like to see his mother and children before he dies.

...

He's never expressed remorse for his actions. You know, when he killed 270 people. But he has terminal cancer. And he's having difficulty sleeping - relating to his illness (not his conscience, mind you).

So he gets to go home and and be with his loved ones as he dies.

Why?!?!?

Oh, that's right - compassionate grounds. And the fact that he says he didn't do it.

Well then, if that's all it takes...
