I'm back, sorta?

Jun 28, 2009 10:39

Hi. Yes. Well, I think I was last on LJ sometime in April, and have only been checking the news (actual news, not fandom news) comms sporadically. Some of it was work being hellaceous, some of it was travel, and some of it was "I'm going to teach myself to knit and ignore technology as much as possible." However, I did miss some birthdays, ( Read more... )

*Hugs Nina*

It's lovely to see you around.

Thank you for the belated birthday wishes.

And did you teach yourself to knit?

How are you and the kitties?

*More hugs*

Everybody's fine - pushy, but fine! (I just tried to eat lunch, and finally ended up having to eat standing up at the counter just so I could have my chicken to myself).

I am knitting some 100% cotton dishcloths because (1) they're practical, so it's not a waste of time and (2) I can practice tension, stitches, etc. I'm feeling increasingly confident. Several people have asked now, so I will probably take some pictures when I've finished the tumbling leaves pattern I'm working on now - it's quite pretty, though I don't know how well it will photograph.

Hope all is well, chez vou!

I'm glad everyone is well. Oh, that's quite the vision. I can imagine you and the demanding ones *g*

Thanks for posting what you're doing - as I said there, that's really excellent.

Yes, thank you. We're all pretty much as normal. Although Lacey currently resembles a patchwork quilt *g* The last time we took her to be stripped (Norfolks should never be cut, just stripped) the lady simply couldn't do it, as it was causing Lace too much distress as the coat wouldn't come out. She thinks it must be tied in with her being spayed, it affects the coat. So she had to cut the rest of the hair and it's finally growing back but the stripped part is so much darker than the rest of it. She looks very funny.

Aw, poor Lacey. Does keeping her coat brushed help at all?

Tessa's "mane" is very long and fine and almost downy, and she loves rubbing her head against the side of doors, the scratching post, etc, and she ends up with matts behind her ears. I'm not quite sure which comes first, but she will not let me brush her mane or, heavens forfend, cut the matts out once she has them. We're going to have to have another go sometime soon.

Well… (copy and paste from above response:

I've been a crocheter since I was about three, when my grandmother taught me, but knitting always bored and irritated me. Then I discovered this other way of doing it, and suddenly, I love it!

Hee! I was a crocheter first too, from elementary age. I found knitting harder to master than crochet, but for most garments I like knitted fabric better. I love crocheted blankets and slippers though.

Yay! There are so many different techniques and ways of doing things. It's fascinating.

I find that the continental "grip" is so much easier to keep the tension going - it's much more like crochet. Makes a HUGE difference.

I like the look of crochet better, you're right, for sweaters and stuff. I've found some lace patterns that I just adore, but I'm going to have to work up to them.

Welcome back! I did wonder where you'd disappeared to.

I have about 3/4 of the next chapter of "Relict" written and hope to finish today or tomorrow.

*jumps up and down and starts obsessively checking email*

By the way, did you see the review of Relict on cot_reviews? papilio_luna did a fantastic job. I couldn't review it myself, of course, being the BR, but I loved seeing someone else getting as excited by the story, and by certain moments within it, as I am myself :)

Hi!

There probably won't be anything until later this evening at the earliest. I'm working on something else right now. It's a weird chapter, I think, a lot of short little moments jigsaw-puzzled together. I feel like they should be longer for pacing, but then it starts to feel like padding!

I did see the review. It was lovely, kind of embarrassing, but really lovely. I'm really glad the writing part of it works for people. I didn't really think of the corset thing being a subversion of the bodice ripper, but then, intentionality DOES NOT MATTER!!

Hey there stranger!

First off, I don't know that anyone is really important enough for the kind of tedious, round-the-clock coverage we get for famous people's deaths recently,

This. I've been looking for a way to articulate what I've been thinking and that paragraph pretty much said it all.

I did like the way they explained things in the new Star Trek film. The casting was surpringly good I thought.

I know. I mean, it was very nice to see Keith Olbermann in his shirtsleeves being all SRS on Thursday night (and the copper tie with the deep blue waistcoat was fine, let me tell you), but honestly, I wanted more news on the Governor who said he was going to be hiking the Appalachian trail and ended up skipping the country for some Argentine nookie - have you heard about our most recent Republican sex scandal? (Olbermann ended up reading the extremely adolescent-sounding love e-mails in a desperately sultry voice to the accompaniment of a panpipe version of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina".) "Hiking the Appalachian trail" is already a new term in the Urban Dictionary for getting laid.

Yeah, I thought the set-up for Star Trek was good, even though the story itself was just okay. It was really more about getting the characters going. I was most impressed by Saldana, Quinto, and Bruce Greenwood (Pike), though Chekov? Was totally off physically. Everyone else was at ( ... )
