BIG RANT: Why I am never reading a Twilight book, nor seeing the movie. EVER.

Nov 19, 2008 08:56

I tell you what. I've never, ever seen a bigger group of batspit crazy fans than the Twilight ones. Geez, Louise, guys. If it's not killing each other at the malls,  you're attacking people giving out free movie passes!

Long story/short story: I'm subscribed to a free movie screening list. The poor guys here were doing what they normally do, which ( Read more... )

I see it differently, I guess. The last bit, I mean. My stepsister is going to pick me up after what will be an undoubtedly shitty night at work tomorrow, and then we're going to head to the movie and be sane moviegoers the same as we were two years ago for the Order of the Phoenix premiere, then we're probably going to go out for an insanely early breakfast and have a nice night together doing something we enjoy. And I don't see how that "encourages" anyone, or makes us look bad. Just because some other Twilight fans are weird or downright awful doesn't make it any more wrong for us to enjoy opening night than it would be for any other film's fans to have a nice evening.

It's just the frustration talking, I think. It'll be a crowded crazy time, full stop - and every person who could act up will be there on opening night. It's fun to go opening night, that's true...and I like going to opening night premieres. But from all the bad publicity going out with these folks? I wouldn't want to be out there.

Granted, this is my own rant. I can't tell folks not to go and enjoy the movie - and if they're sane, I say go for it! But my fear is the crazies will show up opening night and make it hell for everyone.

It's a possibility, although I figure that here it will be a lot of the same people who were in the local paper's coverage of the Breaking Dawn book release last summer, and they all seemed like such sweet girls, even the ones who did come in costume. (I wasn't there, but their attitudes in the article were part of what made me check out the books.) And I guess I'm just hoping for a nice little gathering of sane but excited dorks, with the more rabid fans clustering together somewhere in the front and keeping to themselves. :)

I hope so. But blessings on you totally if you go - it seems like a rolling tide of insanity has hit this full force since last summer. People are treating this like the second coming of the Beatles. :[

*facepalm*

I've been following this fandom with an intense mixture of horror and fascination for months now, and I want to say so much about it... but honestly, I have no idea where to start, and even if I did, I don't think your poor comment box could manage all the capslock and chagrin.

LOL. Oy. I refuse to listen to any more of it, I'm done. The whole San Francisco thing - and now the passes--? It makes me angry beyond measure. I don't want to see these kiddos in the mall or at my theater.

Actually, I feel sorry for the Harry Potter fans/fandom. Folks will be doing Twilight/HP movie crossovers like there's no tomorrow.

I would probably be the same way, but I find the general reactions of the anti-fandom outrageously funny -- not to mention how I've grown to love Robert Pattinson, who plays the lead "vampire." He isn't particularly attractive and his hygiene is repulsive (I'm convinced he's building up a protective layer of hobo grime and bong-water-residue to deter the fangirls) but everything that comes out of his mouth is absolute gold. He hates the movie and thinks his character is retarded, but being the laid-back stoner type, he either doesn't know or doesn't care that saying so bluntly in promotional interviews is bad form. XD

I mean, you're never gonna hear Daniel Radcliffe going, "The books are a joke, the author is acting out her weird sex fantasies on me, and the fangirls' squees are like the screaming at the gates of Hell!" BUT RPATTZ GOES THERE, OH YEAH.

Seriously though? If I weren't laughing at this train wreck, I'd be sobbing.

LOL. Now that's something I'd love to see. But unfortunately that kind of honesty will only endear him to the crazies. He's an honest boy - the kind you want to take home to Mother.

*Eye roll*.

I feel really badly for him, too. I'm afraid he'll have a nervous breakdown before the movie reaches #1 for the third month running.

Pretty much everyone that has a literary opinion that I trust has said that the books are not only poorly written, but are pretty standard, dull, trite teenaged angst fic. I've not heard a single poistive thing about the books, or the movie (with the single exception of Robert Pattinson's performance).

I wasn't interested to start with (and heck, I like the supernatural genre so much I'm currently writing a novel in the genre), and the movie? Ugh. No. Maybe I'll DL it for free in a year and preuse it quick so I can bail if it's as bad as I've been told.

I won't be seeing it or reading the books either, Tarc. I'm having my own private protest because of the fan insanity and I don't care if the movie ended up becoming an Oscar contender: No actor and no fandom deserves this.

Just say no to Twilight! Walk away, and no one will think less of you! :}

I'm not one of the crazies, but I do admit to being a fan of the twilight books. That said, I haven't read Eclipse or Breaking Dawn and like Melayka I am terribly amused by some of the things that RPatz has said.

He's just as scared and turned off by them.

The anti movement and some of the fans are just weird. And I don't think it's the dressing up as I know people who are odd and dressed up for Harry Potter movies.

Some of these fans, like you said are outright scary.

Which is why, I will probably see the movie later on, with my sister, a non fan.

Heya, Des - long time no see! ;)

The Twilight fandom has completely turned me off from wanting to read the books - but that's my own rant. I know some people have really enjoyed the books...but I'm not going to be one of 'em.

For me, it's like going to the mall a week before Christmas when that ONE toy no one can get suddenly gets a small supply at one shop. Two words: Mass. CHAOS.

It rubs me wrong, it does. And seeing the movie on another day seems prudent to me, if there's going to be a lot of pushing, shoving, and crying.

Or breaking of bones...:p

Enjoy it, though! And I'm personally ok...as long as you don't turn sparkly. ;)

*Nods.* I wouldn't mind seeing Bond either - but with my funds as crazy as they are, I'll probably wait until after the Thanksgiving holiday (or I'll catch up with my dollar movie menu).

And perspective is definitely what the fandom needs. Geez. I just...it boggles the mind. It just hurts.

TEH CRAZY. IT BURNZ.
