Britain in EuroperavanasnapeMarch 6 2007, 15:22:06 UTC
I think, although I'm a little hazy on the details, that Britain initially helped set up the idea for a shared economic system (the EEC) but backed out at the last minute. This annoyed the French (and we don't get on well with the French at the best of times) so when we woke up to the idea of the benefits that a shared economy would bring, they kept vetoing us. I think the main reasons for joining the EU were economic - especially under PM John Major (early 1990's), the only reasons put forward for our continued involvement were economic

Stupid me for not even looking it up. From wikipedia. It's called the EEA.
You know, I had no idea people were so hostile. I was just at my friend's house, and we just discussed this. It's kind of bad to admit, but we now felt annoyed with both "Europe" and the US (though I am a bit anti-USA because of their politics). You really had me thinking about this "Western Europe"-thing. It's really just France, Germany and the Benelux-countries, for us. We do seperate ourselves from them. Then there's "Eastern Europe". Then us, Sweden and Denmark (not really sure where we put Finland or Iceland). And of course the UK (do you use "GB" or is it just "UK"?). So Europe is quite parted.
I'm now going to write two essays. One on Britian's relationship to the EU/Europe, and one on Britain's relationship with the US. I was looking through my text book, and I found this (you don't have to read it): one, two and three (sorry for the awful scan-job
