You need not worry. I find myself guilty of initially judging people with the same basis, although "guilty" may not be the correct term, given its negative connotation. It is sometimes said that relationships begin with physical attraction, and I think this holds true not only in romantic ones, even if it is not always the case.
I haven't seen "Gummo" yet! Argg I suck at movies. Friends had discussed it in my presence, though, and I didn't mind. Movies like this are often the ones that illustrate the poetry that is the harshness of life.

I think that if a person really casts aside their pride they would realize that people like those in this movie do exist - and that these people are those that never make it into movies. These people aren't glamorous and no - it might not seem from first glance that people like this have much to say - but I find it insulting that a person would say that these people were being exploited. - anyhow enough ranting at the random reviewer.
As for the movie - it is quite uncomfortable - possibly right from the get-go. It is a pseudo-realistic satire of various problems with American society and should be watched with that in mind... and yes - prosthetic cats are used.
