I would concur that it is a remnant of the gender bias from earlier times. Throughout history it has always been considered most acceptable for the male to be dominant, the female submissive. In the case of two males, it was a matter of power, and in the case of courting a woman, it was always a matter of pleasing the father. In these cases, and in early times, I believe the women, at least in 'respected' families, were never allowed to determine with whom they associated.
