Domestic turkeys drown in the rain because they're too stupid to turn their beaky faces out of the way of the raindrops.
Wild turkeys are very clever, though. Among the more clever of wild birds. Franklin was thinking of wild turkeys, not domestic.
The difference between domestic turkeys and wild turkeys in terms of brains is a bit like the difference between chihuahuas and gray wolves, except chihuahuas are even dumber than and not nearly as useful as domestic turkeys.
