Castle made me ragey last night

May 03, 2011 16:13

I know I read too many spoilers and watch too many preview videos and check out too many promo photos. I know this. My problem with last night isn't even the obvious bait and switch.

As far as the hotel room scene goes, I got why she ran in the first place. I got why he didn't pursue. I didn't quite buy that he apparently RAN for his room, since the camera went from him standing and staring at her door to him closing his 4 seconds later (sure, I counted). And then, I understand why she didn't pursue. I kinda' liked it overall, to be honest.  They got as far as they've ever gotten in acknowledging there's something between them, and I didn't really expect more than that.

No, my problem was that completely WTF ending that, if it were a premise in fanfiction would send me to the back button to find something else to read. OK, so Royce dies with a note to Beckett in his pocket that he was kind enough to mention at the top of he keeps rewriting and not sending.  I'll allow this. In the beginning, we find he was trying to clean his life up and wanted her to be proud of him again.  Whatevs. So, at the end, she finally finishes reading this note from her dead, ex-partner-that-she-was-in-love-with, and he goes all 'shipper on her?

Exhibit A: Royce appeared on one episode that appears to have spanned a few days at most.

Exhibit B: While he seems to get there's something between Castle and Beckett, in the letter he's all "something real between you" like he spent forever with them and knows their intentions and hearts and crap.

Exhibit C: Royce is a hardened cop who took off when Beckett fell for him in the first place. Who is he to know the ways of love, or to even consider sending her a "go get him, girl" letter, like he didn't mess up big time in her eyes the last time he saw her? And he got that she was scared out of the brief interaction with Beckett and Castle as a not-couple?

These are not things I disagree with about Beckett, mind you. But, um, she has LIVE friends who see them together every day.  Javi already said something to her once, and Lanie. Even if they didn't want the same people to say anything, there's Ryan, or Alexis, or Martha, or hell, even Montgomery. Having random, dead, old partner tell her from the grave is all sorts of wrong. And anyway, she was already ready to jump into it, had she not opened the aforementioned door a second too late. She didn't need to read this anymore.

I also do not get how Royce writing it changes anything. She knows she's scared. She already knows everything he said- it isn't that she chooses the job over dating (JOSH!), so much as choosing her partnership with Castle over maybe messing it up by dating CASTLE. I'm still angry all these hours later because EVEN THE FANS WOULDN'T HAVE WRITTEN THIS PIECE OF CRAP, MARY SUE CALLED TO TELL YOU TO DATE HIM ALREADY plotline. Isn't this Mary Sue by definition? A non-major character tries to push the couple together? I. CAN'T. EVEN.

Moving on, Marlowe has likened the changes caused by the finale and leading into next season to Lost moving the island.  Now, I didn't watch Lost, but I did have to hear all about it from my sister who was a big fan (and was also at my house to watch Castle last night). I have theories, yo. Dire, sad, they-had-better-not-jump-the-shark-trying-not-to-jump-the-shark theories. Up to and including serious character injury (not counting the confirmed but unspecified death), separation, and OH TEH GUILT. Marlowe says they have concocted a good reason for them not to be together yet next season. But the whole point of the show, taking off my 'shipper hat a moment, is that they solve crimes together and banter and otherwise have a grand old time sometimes fighting. If they are at this point now and "all the emotional cards are on the table in the finale", I only see so many ways they can keep the show's premise and keep them apart.  And then he says that thing about Lost and moving the island and all I can think of are huge changes.

DEEP BREATH.

Anyway... I'm going to pretend there was no voice-over reading of Royce's letter at the end of last night's episode. I'm going to pretend that didn't happen. And I'm going to keep my conspiracy theories to myself for a while longer, but know that with each bit of leaked information, my theories get darker and less what I want to see. I don't need them together, per se. I just need to not be angry hours after an episode airs and still be yelling WTF at the TV.

We now return you to your regular news cycle.
