Caitlin, you need to do some serious bitching to whoever is in charge of the dining halls there. That is completely unacceptable, and they can't just risk people's lives like that. I'm glad you're okay.

Yeah, my mom already called them today. And I talked to her too. The thing is they're always really good about any of the cookies or brownies or whatever that have nuts in them. But she kept apologizing for it. But what else could she do honestly. And any time in the future that I want ice cream I supposed to go see one of the head people and they'll get it for me out of the back so nothing can happen.

I think now I'm just trying to figure out who would have thought to put peanuts in the chocolate chip cookie dough.... I mean, they were covered with chocolate and everything so that would have been a thing from wherever they get their food from.....

Peanut allergies are always serious! anonymous January 25 2007, 20:22:27 UTC
I happened on your blog while googling peanut allergies and I can't tell you how scared I am to read that you don't think your allergy could be fatal. Peanut allergies are very unpredictable - the majority of people who die each year had only minor reactions in the past. (And your reaction doesn't sound minor to me!) The problem with benedryl is that it can help symptoms in the short term, but mask more serious things, like a drop in blood pressure. You don't have to have your throat close up to die. Talk to an allergist, and get an epipen. Please!

If you'd like to talk with more people who deal with peanut allergies, you can try the discussion boards at www.peanutallergy.com But in any case, please, please at least talk to an allergist. (I hope you mom reads this blog so that she might add her nagging to mine.)

I do take allergy tests. That's how I know that my allergy isn't fatal. It's coming straight from the doctor's mouth. And I go periodically even though I'm deathly afraid of needles to take the nice needle filled allergy test to keep an eye on it. So I have been there and my statements are completely based on what I was told by the doctor.

Sorry to be a nag - this is my last post, I promise! But doctors aren't always right, and the medical community's understanding of peanut allergies are changing fast. I'd really recommend getting a second opinion.

Phillip Heywood's doctors told his family he had a mild peanut allergy too. Here's his story:
