I must not be a Buddhist, if the word "except" keeps popping up in my head as I read that?

"If you put exceptions in your universal love prayer... you may not be a Buddhist."

While I understand why you immediately think of excepting people,
I'm pretty sure the point is that if those individuals were content, they wouldn't need excepting.
