You seem to suggest that giving Samus a character was doomed from the start. Certainly I'll admit that they were never going to please everyone, but I think a less misogynistic development team could have produced something a bit better. (For one thing, they might not have given her high heels.)
I said that I walked into the game giving it the benefit of the doubt. It was one of the moments where you keep on asking, "Will it work? Will it work? Oh, God, I hope it works!"
Benefit of the doubt, as I said. I depersately wanted this to be a good turn-out, but in the end I believe that we were indeed better off not knowing.
That's what I've heard too, although while people have mentioned it, they've said little about *how* it is related to the game.
And there's game/manga separation happening to a lot more franchises than Metroid, so I don't see the Manga as being a viable excuse for Other M's characterizations.

I ended up caring about the character about 1/2 way through the game, which is more than I can say for most games.
