The Doctor was in a terrible mood. Normally, that meant he would just go off and brood until he decided to stop feeling so sorry for himself. But he'd offered to see Romana, and she welcomed such company. He was more than thrilled at the thought of seeing her again, even if the reason they were meeting was due to poor emotional stability and bad

In any case, Romana frowned as the dematerialization engines whined a bit more than usual -- there were still so many adjustments to make! But as her TARDIS touched down and shifted smoothly into what appeared like a nondescript kiosk with a 'Closed' sign in its window, Romana belatedly realized that this was the first successful trip her TARDIS had ( ... )

"Fred!" Oh, for old times' sake. He grinned like a maniac. Nothing like seeing an old friend face to face at long last. "You're looking younger all the time."
He nodded in approval at the TARDIS image, giving the door a solid rap. "I'd almost forgotten what that was like. I get too attached to my daft old police box. Bit hard to believe that if anything works on that TARDIS of yours, it'd be the chameleon circuit. Let's take a look at the damage."

She threw the dematerialization switch, and the TARDIS shuddered, emitting a harsh grinding noise. Instinctively, Romana smacked her fist down on the control panel...and the shuddering stopped, and her TARDIS vanished from Deneb 6 as smooth as silk. Romana raised her eyebrows in amazement. "That actually worked -- and here I always thought The Doctor just did that for show!"
She could feel the strain of rematerializing on Varos, although that was wholly due to the near-empty levels of the mineral that she intended to restock her TARDIS with on that planet. "But once that's finished, then I daresay I'll be at a functioning level again! Of course there's always the lesser functions that need to be cleaned up and resynchronized, but that can be done at leisure ( ... )

"Ah, Varos--haven't popped by this way since, oh, my sixth self, give or take a few decades." He was all grins and energy finding Romana safe and sound and not blown to bits.
"It worked! Knew it would work; I had no doubts whatsoever. You might want to keep a hammer handy by the console, just in case. But still, that's fantastic. C'mon," he prompted, instinctively reaching for her hand (he must've gotten that habit from dragging Rose everywhere), "let's go nick us some of that Zeiton-7, then!"
