D&D 4.0 - first impressions

So, I had the opportunity to play a pre fabricated adventure using the new D&D rules.  I believe it Was mister Aaron Greenburg that afforded me this chance, so big up to ya!  We ran the following Party ( Read more... )

So - First impression (which I forgot to detail) is that it's a fun system, seems to be easier to settle into. I am afraid that the compartmentalized abilites, etc. will make it difficult to customize a character to what I want to play; I will need to see a complete set of rules to figure out if that is the case, because it could very easily be the fault of prefabbed characters.

"Sort of like Spiritual Empathy, which I liked."

I'll call the lawyers. Magestry: prepare to make a Floating Market full of money.

4) Gnomes aren't a playable race, but the Dragonborn gets an At Will breath weapon?!?

Mike Mearls (one of the developers) was discussing how he hates gnomes. He gave them the ability in his 4th Edition Eberron playtest game to ability to talk to burrowing mammals (which gnomes traditionally have) - only they couldn't talk back. It was a few games later that one of his players pointed out that EVERYONE had that ability.

An at-will breath weapon isn't that crazy: 3.5 had the dragonfire shaman, which was a character class that granted an at-will breathweapon as a base feature, and it was FUCKING AWESOME.

"to hear that they're only selling the first part of the PHB/DMG/MM with more to follow (Yearly updates!?), it made me a little sad."I am...apprehensive about the truth of this ( ... )

IIRC, the Spiritual Empathy mechanics were my idea -- I'd want a (10%) cut. ;-)

I think the first wave of Core Books will be complete. Anything beyond that and I'll not likely buy it regardless of what 4E developers want me to think/do.

I had a great time yesterday. Raptor Jesus = most ridiculous spur of the moment name that I have kept while role playing ever. Yet fun. I still think my favorite part was when your started distracting the dwarves with finger snaps and music. If Aaron had been drinking anything at that moment, he totally would have snarfed. :-D

My take on the new 4.0 rules is that they may or may not have over-simplified. As much as I hate to admit it, 3.0/3.5 were leaps and bounds easier to play that 2.0, except that I will always miss the the ease of reference of the old charts and tables. I also thought that 3.0/3.5 made everything much more customizable, and I feel like 4.0 may have taken that all away for additional simplicity, which would kind of suck. But again, we did only get a sampling.

Conclusion: An enjoyable game with enjoyable people, no matter what the rules are. Plus, the rules we got a taste of were simple and easy to play. I'll reserve further opinions for post book viewing.
