Advent Fic Meme, Day 2

Note: If I made mythic age names for all of Vikaya's family, not only would I be very confused, everyone else would be, too. Suffice to say she is in no way immortal, she's just reincarnated a bunch. Also, work wrecks havoc on my sense of day. I haven't slept yet, so this is still the 2nd for me. ^__~

"This would be so much easier if horses weren't afraid of dragons," Vikaya told Saighnean with a groan, showing far more annoyance with a dragon than almost anyone else from Sirlota would dream of hinting at. "Even our horses don't much like you around, and we train them special."

Saighnean pouted, crossing her arms. "I'm in a human form, they should like me well enough. Besides, that's what you get for bringing a prey animal to a predator's hunt."

"I'm sorry my tiny human legs can't keep up with your amazing draconic flying abilities," Vikaya replied with a smile. "I have to try to keep up somehow. Just next time, fly up from behind me, so at least the damn horse runs in the correct direction this time?"

“Well, at least we’ll have warning this way. When we hear a terrified horse, we’ll know we’ve managed to find Lebe,” Saighnean said, sounding matter of fact.

“Am I still with the not asking what went down there?” Vikaya asked. “Because it’s getting kind of awkward, me being yours and my twin being Lebe’s.”

Saighnean managed to give the impression of her tail thrashing in annoyance, even in human guise.

Vikaya rolled her eyes and started walking after her horse. “Did you have a falling out with him?”

“Yes, I’m tracking him through the forest where he doesn’t want to be found because it sounded like a good time,” Saighnean replied dryly. “Yes, there were words, not what you were thinking, and we parted ways on less than good terms. And no, I’m not going to share with you.”

“You know, momma taught us that in a fight, it doesn’t matter so much who’s right or wrong, but that if you’re sorry about if it happened, just apologize and get it over with.”

“She didn’t,” Saighnean said with an amused snort. She’d met the woman in question a few times.

“She’s raising four children, two of whom are dragon touched twins who are far too competitive,” Vikaya replied. “She still said it. Okay, so she said it after boxing our ears. It still counts.”

“You must be quite the difficult brood,” Saighnean told her. “Always stirring up trouble. Don’t you know better than to poke the chimera too often?”

“But poking the chimera is what lead me to be able to keep up with you, dearest dragon, and if you didn’t have me, who would you be talking to on this pleasure trek through Midob? Guin knows better than to leave the castle. She has a hoard there and it’s safely guarded. Though my cousin mentioned that another dragon may be helping to guard her hoard, if you know what I mean.”

“Oddly, I think I can grasp what the meaning is.” Saighnean stopped short, looking around.

Vikaya obediently looked around too, though she was pretty sure she wouldn’t see whatever her dragon was looking at. Dragons had far superior senses, even masquerading as human.

“Lebe’s here,” Saighnean whispered.

Vikaya nodded. “So’s Kalani,” she told her dragon.

“Well, of course. Why do you say?”

“Because she’s leaning against the tree up there.” Vikaya loved her dragon dearly, but sometimes Saighnean was so smart she went full circle back to stupid.

Kalani waited until Vikaya tilted her head to jerk a her thumb toward where Lebe was. While Saighnean bounded off toward him, shifting back into her dragon form, Vikaya strolled up to her twin. She still took a moment to admire Saighnean’s blue, green, and yellow variegated scales that flashed in the light. Her dragon always smelled like the air after a strong storm, part of the reason horses couldn’t stand her.

“Please tell me you didn’t tell another story about something Mother said,” Kalani greeted her. “Mother’s getting somewhat tired of trying to keep straight everything she’s purportedly said.”

“It was only getting them to make up, this time. Said that Mom taught us that if you were sorry there was a fight to apologize and move on.” Vikaya shrugged.

“At least that one’s easy to remember.”

Vikaya leaned against the tree. “Wanna go help me find my horse again?” she asked.

“Life would be so much easier if horses weren’t scared of dragons,” Kalani said as way of agreement as they headed off into the trees. Luckily, panicking horse was pretty easy to track.
