Nature hike!

I went on a really amazing guided wildflower hike at Eno State Park last Sunday. I've never been to this particular park entrance which is strange because it's only a few miles from my house and has things that I like, like a river, attractive rocks, scenic ruins, and wildflowers ( Read more... )

That is beautiful. I can tell you about the sluice gate ruins, when they were in use they had big huge doors that closed to hold back the water--like in a canal lock, but bigger! Our ruins still have one of the hinges left.

We have ruins of a dam and sluice gates near us that were used for water power to power a textile mill. You can still see the gates and the mill race even though the factory is long gone.

I would love to see lady slipper orchids--they're supposed to grow around here (Maryland suburbs of DC) but I've never found any.

OK, that makes a lot more sense! There were quite a few mills in this area, too, but a lot of them are just piles of rocks now.
The orchids grow on north-facing slopes near rivers, if that helps you any!
