I'll help as much as I can! I know I'm across the nation but I'll try to help. What I recommend is every time you get a pay check, put all but $20 or so in your savings and don't touch it until you have to pay rent or an emergency comes up. That $20 or so has to last you until the next paycheck, that way you're not spending unnecessary money, you have to make sure what you buy is what you need cause you only have that limited amount until your next pay check.
I completely understand that "swipe it's yours" thing. I'm the same way... I have to talk myself out of sooo much cause I know I really don't need it I just want it.
Don't worry, I know you can do this! You just have to keep reminding yourself not to spend money. Think of a way to remind yourself, like putting something in your wallet so when you reach for that card you can go "O ya!" and save!
You're thinking correctly. Until I got my first cc in my mid-20s, I firmly stuck with the "Do I have cash enough to buy it? No? Then I don't need it." Granted, having one is, as you said, wonderful for the slidie-takie convenience, but when I finally looked at my total debt on 3 cards ... and realized the same amount could be used as a downpayment on a house, or to buy a new car outright, I hit the brakes. I'm now down to one cc and my Lowe's card, which I will never part with until all my renovation/remodel/landscape needs are met. Read: NEVER
