I've done some life analysis .. and here's my verdict.

I've made a bit of a big decision.. doesn't sound that big but it is, when you're me. I'm quitting my job at the end of December and I'm going travelling until aroundabout at least Mayish. This of course, is based on the theory that my knee is better by then. Who wants to go to Austria with a fucked knee? Not I. Long story short the physio thinks I ( Read more... )

I have a backpack you could borrow, quite a nice, big one, but I imagine it would cost so much to ship it to you it would probably be cheaper to buy one there. Sorry.

Is it army issue? That'd be mad! Backpacking with a US Army backpack.. wonder what kind of reactions I'd get :o)
I thought of you yesterday when I managed to send around a link to a site giving away free Ipods, and failed to notice it was US citizens only. I sent round an apology, but so far one of the people has signed up anyway! If I get enough (stoopid) people, I still have your mailing address - I'll get them to send you an Ipod ;o)

Neat, thanks! Umm, yeah, I have an Army issue one, but trust me, they don't give us very nice stuff. Ergonomically correct, it is not. That one hurts, and although you can fit an awful lot in it, the weight is terrible on your back. I use a real civilian backpacking one when I am not doing "Army" stuff.

No worries :o)
Hey any idea how much I'd spend on a decent one? I don't need the best or anything.. just a decent one.

Mine was 1/2 price at Kathmandu for $250, but you could get better and cheaper elsewhere. Dave's was awesome, but for $450 you'd want it to be.

The army disposal store in chatswood has some starting around $170. I wouldn't scrimp too much on a pack though, when you're spending so much on the rest of your trip it's worth having a decent one. It will make all the difference - by the end of my trip I just wanted to go home, which was 90% because I was sick of carrying my pack around.

You should look at spending $100 (if you get a really good deal) to $250. I agree with rowie1, don't try to save too much money 'cause that's one thing you don't want to fall apart when you really need it.
