3 years ago when i went to Tokyo, I didn't see that much films. In my hometown, I didn't watch TV that much either. Towards things like this, I didn't care at all. But after going to Tokyo, you can only watch DVD at home to pass time . Also, at the filming site, the director, staffs and my co-stars, they would tell me "This film is not bad.", with that I started to watch films little by little. After watching a lot of films, I unconsciously rented out Director Ishii Takashi's Hito ga Hito o Ai Suru Koto no Doushiyou mo Nasa ("The Bural Hopelessness of Love"), I cried watching. I was really moved, when I finally calmed down and stopped crying, I felt that the actress was really amazing, the cameraman was amazing, the lightings were also amazing. Incessantly checking out the plot, I was also able to pay attention to the interesting places in the film itself, from different perspective, I was able to discover the charms of the film. Since then, my interest in old Japanese films emerged, and I would watch their special screening. Laputa Asagaya, Shin-Bungeiza, Waseda Shochiku...these are places that I don't go to before, but now whenever I don't have any urgent business, I would go (laughs). When I spot a pamphlet in a cinema, I would line up my own schedule. I always watch on my own. Recently, I watched Edward Yang's The Terrorizers at Shibuya Image Forum Theater.
I go to Cinemavera Movie Theater almost every week, I also watched the special screening of Director Kumashiro Tatsumi that was held here several times. Director Kumashiro's films, regardless of which film it is, will surely have an editing similar to a magician that creates excitement. The leaping horse scene from Koibito-tachi wa nureta ("lovers are wet"), Just this one makes one feel very moved, free and alive. In short, just watching this film makes me very happy. The films during those era, basing from the things that appears on the screen, is completely different from the current films. Although, I still don't know what the reason is.
That kind of wonderful film, at that time is a small production, afterwards they are shown as a special screening in cinemas nationwide. That kind of thing is rare nowadays, later on it might gradually disappear. At present time, the special screening for Director Jean-Luc Godard is still being held regularly on famous cinemas, thinking that this might also disappear one day is heartbreaking. When I heard the news of Shibuya Auditorium Cinema is hutting down, I was so shocked that my jaw dropped (laughs).
I don't only like old films, I also like the new ones. After I watched Godard's Histoire du Cinema ("Film History"), I went to buy Shigehiko Hasumi's book, and systematically reviewed the beginning of Lumiere Brother's film history. Apart from the interesting moving frames, there's an additional interesting sound, colors... These were captured not until the development of film techniques, so I also came to like digital films. For instance, that specific drifting feeling In Director Hong Sang-Soo's film, it was possible to produce because there's already a digital technology. I also like watching films at cinemas, faced with a huge immersive screen, it stimulates the five senses, it possesses an irreplaceable pleasure.
In short, I only have films. Apart from this, I can't find anything else that puts my heart at ease. That's why, if I can stay a little longer at a place where I can meet movie lovers , I would feel very happy. Movie store is also good, filming site is also good, this is the place where I could rest and feel at ease.
