Author's Note: Okay, so I somewhat stole Dexter. I'm sorry. I just kind of fell for this little guy because of this fic.
Summary: She died before her time.
"--oved you." Dammit. I thought that whole dying before you finish your sentence was only done in movies. Chase is crying now, and I can nearly feel the hot tears falling on my cheeks.
"This sucks. I wasn't supposed to die now."
"Don't I know it." I turn with that sort of calm one has in a dream to look at the boy that I am positive had always been waiting nearby. He readjusts his glasses so that they rest under his limp blond hair.
"Hey, I'm Gert."
"I know." He smiles wistfully as I reach out to shake his hand. He declines. "Can't shake your hand, we're both noncorporeal, now. I'm Dexter."
"I'm sorry." I grimace. What a name to foist on a kid. Almost condemns them to a life of geekdom. "What were your parents thinking?"
Dexter shrugs. "I guess they thought they were being ironic. My mom was big on that. My dad just thought it was the name of a cartoon."
"Which it is," I point out.
The boy laughs, reminding me of something I remembered in my life. I look down at Chase,but he's in the exact pose I'd left him in. "You know, you remind me of someone."
"I should. I was going to be your son."
And I can see everything. My chin. Chase's smile. He's perfect. Dammit.
