(This is Eve/Orihime, just in case you're wondering who the hell just voted and all...forgot I was on this account.)

Writing history is a pain, but at the same time, it does show you know what's going on with the character. Maybe just ask for a summarized history? A decent roleplayer should still put some effort into it, but if they want to go all out with details, hey, why not.

As much of a pain as it can be (on both the mod and player sides of things), I'm all for keeping properly written out histories. It forces the player into a review (which I've found often prevents spur-of-the-moment apps) and proves their knowledge of canon.

It can indeed be a pain to write out the histories, but at the same time it gives you a chance to see what the person's writing is like, in a way that journal samples don't give you--and as others have said, it forces a canon-review. So even if we change things, having a summarized history is still useful.
