[ He couldn't move.
Above, he could hear the sounds of battle winding down. Less running around and shouting, less screaming. It would be quiet soon, quiet enough for them to hear him if he called for help. But the dark copper puddle forming in the dirt around him, and the creeping numbness in his hands and feet, said that soon would still be too late.
There hadn't even been that many of them, that was the part that was driving him crazy. Overwhelmed in battle, sure. That wasn't such a bad way to fall. Blown up trying to save the world, great! Girls would cry over his heroic loss for years, but this? Pushed off a fucking cliff by some two-bit foot soldier? What a pathetic way to go. ]
[The last person who had attacked them fell, and Hakkai immediately rushed towards the edge of the cliff. Goku hollered something but the green-eyed youkai didn't even listen.
GOJYO!? [He called down, trying to see where the man had landed. Unlike Goku's fall down a cliff, the hanyou did not have his resilience.]
I'M COMING DOWN!
[A few moments later and with the help of nyoi-bo to lower him down, Hakkai landed down at the bottom.]
No rush. [ --he chuckled, the sound wet and thick in his lungs. ]
M'not goin' anywhere.
[ This was bad. This was really bad. He wasn't sure what-all he'd broken, but from the way things shifted and burned with every breath, he was pretty sure that a lot of them were on the inside.
Some of them were on the outside too, of course. The way his leg was bent under him, there was no way it couldn't be broken, and there was a dull throbbing ache at the back of his head that couldn't be anything good.
He was a mess. A total mess, and he couldn't help but laugh. Falling off a cliff! Very suave, Sha. Good fucking job. ]
[Hurrying towards Gojyo, Hakkai immediately knelt beside his friend to overview the damage. This looked...
He would fix it. He had to.]
Don't move. You might end up paralyzed if you do.
[He had healed Sanzo's broken neck. Surely a broken body could be mended the same way? Letting his chi flow through his body and out his hands, he concentrated on the head injury first.]
Jeep | 2 + 2 | I am a terrible persondragonvehicleApril 24 2011, 23:44:33 UTC
[It wasn't until later in the night that Jeep was starting too feel sick. The tiny dragon's temperature spiked up and he couldn't stop shaking, unable to keep anything down. Flopped like a squished rag in a basket placed their rented room, the tiny critter was really, really sick.
Who would suspect that the fish he'd been given at the restaurant they ate at earlier in the day had been poisoned? The seemingly kind young waitress had thought that the small dragon was 'soooo cuuute' and gave him a snack on the house.
Now the ikkou's only means of transportation was too sick to even move.]
You ARE a terrible person!gojyo_saaamaApril 25 2011, 00:45:21 UTC
[ At the window, Gojyo blew a cloud of smoke toward the sky and glanced over his shoulder at the sick little lizard. Jeep looked even worse than he had earlier, if that was possible. ]
Hey. They'll be back soon.
[ With medicine and a vet and gods only knew what else. Hakkai should have stayed, Gojyo thought, grinding his cigarette out on the pile of butts on the windowsill. He should have gone for the vet while Hakkai stayed here with Jeep. What did he know about tending a sick dragon? ]
[He gave Gojyo a tired and pained look from his place in the basket, and then flopped one of his toothpick-boned wings over the edge of his bed. It was followed by another tiny whine before he was throwing up the rest of the broth Hakkai had given him before he left.
[ He jumped back, even though there was no way for the dragon-puke to touch him. So gross, Jeep. Hurling everywhere, that was seriously fucking...
...red? ]
Jeep?
[ Shit. Shit. He wasn't a doctor by any stretch, but he knew what bloody puke meant.
Uncertain, Gojyo knelt down next to Jeep's basket. ]
I don't suppose you just ate a mouse or somethin', huh?
[ Slowly, he reached out a hand, wincing in expectation of being bitten. Jeep had never liked him much - the feeling was mutual - but for the first time ever Gojyo reached out his hand hoping to be bitten. Poor Jeep didn't look healthy enough to lift his head, much less bite. ]
Genjyo Sanzo | 5+3brat_monkApril 25 2011, 18:12:21 UTC
[In retrospect, it had been a bad idea to go through the desert without supplies. Sanzo had rushed out of town, so intent on making his way west that nothing else had mattered.
Now it had been days without food or water. Sanzo was a stubborn bastard. He'd keep on walking for another day or two in spite of how weak and dehydrated his body felt, but he'd KILL for a drink of water about now.]
[ Just a few paces behind Sanzo, Gojyo was struggling with the sand and the heat. There was sand in his boots, in his shorts, gritty on the back of his neck, everywhere. ]
Just a few days, no problem.
[ Even though Jeep couldn't drive on the sand, even though they were on foot and down two members, Sanzo had still insisted they continue forward. Gojyo licked his lips, imagining. Hakkai and Goku would be rounding the pass by now. There had been a river on the map, deep and cool and full of... ]
[Sanzo tripped in the sand which was shifting constantly under his feet. He wanted to lie down and die, but there was no way he was gonna let the kappa outlive him.]
...you bastard.
[He should've gone with Hakkai and Jeep. Should've taken the long way around. But the desert had looked so small on the map.]
[ Gojyo wiped his face, dry powdery sand rough beneath his palm. He'd stopped sweating a couple hours back and he wasn't sure, but that probably wasn't a good thing. ]
Cho Hakkai | 1 + 2monocledApril 27 2011, 06:35:34 UTC
[It was an accident. A small one, the kind that the party runs into all the time: squabbling, Gojyo and Goku set off a trap, a spell was released, something very bad happened, and now there's nothing anyone can do.
Hakkai's vines grew strong and rapid, out of control. It's as if they're trying to escape him - he's rooted to the floor of this cave, trapped in an upright position, only bits of his face and body showing beneath a thick layer of foliage. But it's not being trapped that will kill him.
They're inside him, too, slowly growing and twisting around, knocking him his insides. It's intensely painful, but Hakkai is doing his best. Laughing, when he's conscious.
But everyone knows he's not going to make it: Hakkai most of all.]
[ Bullshit he's not going to make it. Bull-fucking-shit he's not. And if Goku would just let go of him, Gojyo would make it better. Somehow. He'd pull Hakkai out of that mess, he'd cut the vines off, something. There's something he can do, there has to be. ]
Gojyo. [His voice is pleasant, distracted: like when he's busy cooking or sewing and Gojyo or Goku asks him a question.] We've been over this, the vines are part of my body, if you rip them out the wounds will kill me.
Sanzo will be back soon, until then, please be patient~.
[ Yeah, Sanzo will be back soon. With his gun, and he'll shoot Hakkai right between the eyes. There's no cure for this. There's nothing anybody can do, not when Hakkai's... fuck, he's dead already. He's just still standing. ]
Fuck that, let me th'fuck...!
[ Goku, already distracted by grief, doesn't see the elbow coming. It lands hard, causing him to cry out and his grip to ease just enough, just long enough for Gojyo to pull free. An instant is all it takes for him to leap forward, arms buried to the elbow in writhing green as he feels desperately for Hakkai's arm, his chest, anything to grab on to. Maybe if he pulls Hakkai out of the cave, the vines will stop? It's worth a try. ]
Young Cho Gonou | 3 + 1scarylilgonouApril 27 2011, 06:51:26 UTC
[In the end, the emptiness was too much to take. Gonou never really felt complete. The emptiness was a gaping maw that swallowed all the light in his life until he was nothing but a shell of a person who hardly cared when the nuns clucked their tongues at him or the children prodded and teased him.
It was easy, really. Gonou read about different ways to go, and none of them were pleasant, nor were many of the methods easy to come by. Still, his pet interest in apothecary science has come in handy: he's made a poison, and injected himself with it. Now it's time to wait for sleep to come.
He's laying out beneath his favorite tree, watching the clouds and springtime sun shift the patterns of shadow between the leaves. Usually, he reads a book here, isolated from the rest of the world. It's one of his fondest places - it seems fair he'll die here too.
[ No, he's not alone. Not long after he settles back, there's a rustling from the nearby bushes, and then a boy creeps out. Look closely, Gonou - this is a rare creature. See the matching red hair and eyes? It's not common for a half-human, half-youkai hybrid to live this long.
And, judging by the scrapes and bruises (some weeks old, some very fresh), it's been a fight every step of the way.
He pauses, still within the relative safety of the shrubbery, and darts his gaze back and forth across the idyllic scene, nervous as a wild animal. When he finally speaks, his voice is hoarse and barely louder than a whisper. ]
[It's hard, at first, for Gonou to wake up enough to speak, and he doesn't even bother sitting up. His tongue is thick in his mouth, not really wanting to move even for a single syllable.]
[ It's with a wild animal's grace that the boy steals out from the cover of the bushes, and carefully picks his way to Gonou's side. He crouches there, filthy matted hair hanging in his face, and stares at Gonou like he's never seen a human boy before.
