It's never easy, but families have to cut the cord sooner or later. When I was dating Joe, it was understood that distance and frequency were deciding factors. Since Joe's parents lived 4+ hours away and mine were an hour, we saw the parents that we couldn't see for an afternoon.

Too late for thanksgiving unless you bring poomie. New Years Eve is a date night. Christmas it depends upon what your scheduale is. This has nothing about cutting the cord, it is about family and one or two days a year (it is usually one or the other) to spend it together. Usually these holiday are also geared towards "There is always room for one more", and lest face it with the food orgy that they are, there always is room for one more.

If you are going to spend time with your family because of guilt... sounds pretty miserable to me.

Considering that you see your family on a daily basis and only see Poomie when you can, I'd say spend time with Poomie. :)
