Mass Effect 2 Teaser and What I'd Like to See (And Expect To)

Feb 23, 2009 20:50

I'm actually surprised that I haven't seen anyone post on this considering that virtually everyone I know up here is a BioWare fan in some way or another. But hey, it's late February. I know how it is this time of year.

I'm going to be brief here, in large part because there isn't much to say. We've known for quite a while that Mass Effect 2 was ( Read more... )

rampant speculation, mass effect 2

I agree that Shepard ain't dead. But just having people (in-game people, that is) think he or she is gives the developers a lot of freedom. If it's an undercover dealie, the player can play as Shepard without NPCs reacting like you're Shepard. Kinda ingenious, really.

I think the idea with the geth in the trailer is that you're seeing Shepard's actual armor incorporated into a geth. If you look close, there are splatters of (presumably human) blood on the armor. Like this geth killed Shepard, then took his/her armor. Though really it's probably just a way to visually depict the dramaz of the KIA announcement.

I may be reading too much into the geth wearing the armor thing. Still, part of me hopes that ME2 has more than the previous "AIs are all evils" trope, though that might just be my love of stuff like BSG and GitS showing through. Got a soft spot for 'em robots, I do.

I'm guessing that Shepard's not really dead, because that would just be way too lame especially if they're going to make several sequels with a continuous storyline. Every time you play a new game, having your old character be dead or killed would get really, really lame after awhile.

Personally what I'd like to see is:

1. Fewer side quests. The ones that are included should have should have meaning, depth and be interesting instead of bland cookie cutter quests.
2. No Mako (I hate that freaking thing).
3. Some meaningful interaction with the NPC's beyond romance. Actually, I think I'd rather there be no romance at all this time, especially if it's going to be a rehash of all their previous romances.
4. The flotilla, because that just sounds so cool.

Is there a release date yet?

1. If by fewer sidequests you mean "less collecting random stuff across the galaxy" I wholeheartedly agree. It's not like you even get much besides a nice pat on the back from BioWare for going to the trouble (and I did, on my most recent playthrough). Other side quests are good, but like you say, they ought to be more than afterthoughts patched on to make the game seem "open." BioWare did well enough for several years without badly imitating Bethesda.

2. The Mako could be awesome. But it requires good game design behind it. The way it was in ME1 was tedious - and useless as it turned out. I was shocked - shocked, I tell you - when a friend of mine, frustrated with the Mako's gimicky controls actually got out and battled a geth colossus on foot. And he did better, ending all suspension of disbelief. Proof positive that the Mako, as it stands in ME1, is pretty much broken ( ... )

No exact release date, no, but sometime during the first quarter of 2010 based on reports from EA. It was originally posted as with "2009" but that appears to have meant EA's fiscal year, rather than the actual year.

I didn't think the romances in the last game were bad (you're right, they're definitely an upgrade from the Jade Empire ones, because HOLY CRAP SKY *facepalm*), but I did think they were definitely trodding over the same territory that they've gone over before. In the male romance options for instance, there are just so many similarities between Valen/Anomen/Carth/Sky/Kaiden. Don't get me wrong, some of those were well written and entertaining (Carth for example is the best, I think) but it would be nice to see them try writing a different romance archetype for a change - you know... something without a tragic past that you have to fix (and not using Sbarge's voice would also be a bonus). I'd love to see a romance option along the lines of Canderous/Keldor/Sagacious Zu/Bao Dur ( ... )
