When atheists need to tell someone to "Go to hell!", do they have to say instead, "Go to the farthest coldest outer reaches of space!" - ??

Tell them disgustedly to, "Go piss up a rope!" That pretty well gets the sentiment across.

Fun talk, thanks.

We were remarking how we are getting pretty tired of all this type of art that is supposedly a search for spirituality. I'd say that most art is that, but some folks have to hit us over the head in the most obvious ways about their entry level spiritual quests. I remarked that I wanted to explore and find my material side, and we both laughed affirmatively ( ... )

Speaking as a devout agnostic (while I dismiss the notion of God, I must concede that I am NOT God and so may be fallible in this asumption), I still tell people to go to Hell.... sometimes. After all, such commentary is intended to impact the target, not neccessarily reflect the beliefs of the source.

Telling an atheist to go to Hell is meaningless to the atheist - much as calling a white person a *insert random racial epithet here* is meaningless. But an atheist telling a religious person to go to hell or dropping the n-bomb does have impact. And for good reason.

(sorry for not answering till now but didn't get an email response to this comment, hmmm...)

There was something I was thinking about-- it doesn't necessarily reflect the 'beliefs' of the source, if the source is a- without belief. It's not a disbelieving of hell or a god if they're saying they're not even acknowledging the belief for the unbelief to occur. (Not sure if I'm phrasing that correctly but...) does that make sense?

It's not quite what you wanted, but "Go find your ark!" sprung to mind when reading this...
