Niya was sent to the store almost immediately upon arriving home that day, a small, mundane list stuffed into his hand. The only out of the ordinary item scrawled in Sakito’s loose chicken scratch was birthday candles. Although, seeing as it was the bassist’s day in less than two hours, the colorful little decorations didn’t look out of place in the basket to him. Still, it didn’t seem quite fair that his birthday was the next day and he had to go to the grocery store. Two pounds of potatoes, a gallon of orange juice, and one bag of rice was left to find. He had already picked up the curry powder and carrots, which meant his lover was probably planning to make curry for his birthday dinner. Niya had to smile a bit at that, for he did enjoy the dish. If Sakito was anything, he was invariably thoughtful when it came to birthdays.
Choosing the last potato, Niya dropped the bag into his cart and checked out. The drive home was quick and uneventful. He lugged all the plastic grocery bags up the stairs in one trip, then dumped them on the floor by the refrigerator. Sakito was nowhere in immediate sight, but it was getting late and the guitarist was probably already in bed, reading. Forgoing putting the groceries away would only end in spoiled food, however much Niya would rather find his lover instead.
But Sakito found him as he stacked things into the fridge, slender fingers curling around his arm and a soft purr in his ear. What met Niya’s eyes as he turned to kiss the other’s silky hair was certainly unanticipated. Sakito stood beside him barely clothed in gossamer chiffon and red satin ribbon and a timidly expectant smile.
“…Wow.”
“Happy birthday, darling,” Sakito replied and planted a quick kiss on the tip of Niya’s nose.
