Why do people do what they do?

So people make mistakes. Do you help them and know that you are doing a good thing or do you tell them to suck it up and deal with the shit they got themselves into. So we decided to help. I now wonder why we did. Ok so he is talking like he is grateful. When he got money we got about a 50% pay back financially...what about that other 50%! Ok
