...that it's been almost two months since i last posted, so this is hardly the best thing to write up... but i'm curious! just saw it, and i want to know everyone's opinions...
reactions during the movie: GUFFAWTITTERWINCEGIGGLEWINCELAUGHHYSTERICALLY
reactions after the movie: .........it was actually worse than i feared. i didn't think it would be possible.
opinions: the emotion was just sucked out of the movie, whether it was the script or the actors, i'm not sure. well, the acting was fairly horrific by itself, but man.
and there were little things that got left out in the script or changed and i just couldn't figure out why! for example, jacob not telling bella the old stories INCLUDINGTHEWEREWOLFFUTUREPLOTPOINTAUGH and straight up telling her that the cullens were vampires... there really was no reason to change the story, she had a plausible excuse to go to port angeles and wander to a bookstore anyway, so why the change? what is jake going to say in the next movie... "yeah, remember that story that i totally didn't tell you and you had to go read in a book that i magically know you bought to read about our old legends and it totally says we're werewolves? yeah..."
and the pace was ridiculous. it was either way too fast paced or simply not done well enough to capture the love in bella and edward's relationship. it was just a lot of edward being creepy and bella freaking out, and long spiral-y shots of landscape and the music WOULDNEVERSTOPOHGOD. i've never been good at sound design, but when the soundtrack distracts from the show, that's not a good sign. of course, it could've had help from the acting, but still. it was almost as bad as the SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowww.w.w..w....w mini make out session.
there was just no connection between and for the characters in the end. bella and edward were just weird (and seriously, could there have been any more stuttering/intake of breath/whatever you call their attempts at speaking to each other?). i couldn't believe that bella had fallen in love with edward, but what was there to fall for? a book that seems to be about characters and personalities and development, the movie was just like LOOKVAMPIRESBASEBALLPROMYAY! oh, and pointless inserts of james, victoria and laurent killing people and showing how daaaaaaangerous they were, and even emphasizing that point by laurent telling them OMGJAMESISSCARYEEK, but then james was taken out pretty darn easily... and then it made no sense for edward to suck out bella's venom when clearly carlisle wasn't all that distracted since bella only broke her leg and got stabbed by a piece of glass instead of falling apart from her wounds... the sense of urgency in the film was just so wonky!
as a reluctant fan of the books (love/hate relationship there), i'm fairly bewildered by this adaptation. and as someone with prior knowledge of the plot, i have no idea how on earth people who haven't read the books would understand the movie. it was just so bizarre!
at least alice looked cute.
