So, I got involved in a conversation online with a self-proclaimed born-again Christian, who claims to print out pamphlets about her faith and leave them in public bathrooms and laundromats and the like. She showed a complete lack of interest in my salvation, claiming that so long as she got the word out, what I did with it was my business ( Read more... )

I think you make a good point about external answers given to internal questions, and the insecurity around external forces that might take those answers away.

Up where I live, there's a notable member of the community who is Born-Again, and she is not only intolerant of those who do not go to her church - she is actively intolerant of choices she herself has made.

Her latest rant was actually published in a local community newspaper. The topic of the rant: why the world would be a better place "if women just kept their legs together" and why single mothers are going to be the downfall of civilization.

The catch? She herself has four children by three (possibly four - she isn't sure) fathers.

The pot calling the kettle black is not a metaphor with which she is familiar.

I'm a Catholic and I kind of feel sorry for my OWN eventual damnation ... yeah, it is a strange predicament.

the bible, the koran, and all the other literary treasures of the various religions were written by old men with time on their hands and a definate need to control others. how better to stay on top of the pile then to make rules that mean they have to listen to you or else. stoning, tying people in a sack and throwing it in a river, beheading, killing you and all your family unto the 3rd and 4th generation and crucifixion were common in biblical times so you needed to know the rules and how better to control the people on the bottom then by writing and owning the rules.
i have always believed alot about religion is about controling the masses, and old men in skirts seem to do it really well.
ooooh rose listen to me go on.
