NM was the players, it never was the owners to begin with. It belonged to those of us who went there daily and who loved it, not the people who hated the players and thought they were gods gift to the world.
Problem was most of the players moved on to MMOs even before NM keeled over and died. In the end a lot of people were driven away, sadly, some passed away and there was never a significant attempt to re-create the community without the bullshit

Yeah I miss Deb too:/ And she'd never be at any other version of Nightmare. She's the one that talked me into beginning to play there. And it reminded me too much of her after I found out she died to even go on and play anymore so I stayed away for a long time then found out later that it had died entirely.
I think everyone who spent a fair bit of time there at various times would like to have gone back to re-kindle the memories but for the vast majority I would imagine they have moved on with real life absorbing most of their time and for others they have probably become a part of other virtual communities.
Something like NM would be interesting but a lot of water has passed under the bridge and people will have changed, many would be gone and it would likely find new some people. It wouldn't be the same, it would just have some similarities and some reminders of things we had forgotten.
There are some groups that are keen to re-create NM as it was, I am not sure how far they got into it or if they had given up. I think too much effort was going into rebuilding it rather than rebuilding the community that was fragmented. Without the community the mud is just an empty shell.
What if you had nightmare as a WOW-like MMO? Currently i'm learning how to use the new version of blender for modeling characters, might switch to it for buildings as well. The MMO engine I plan to use is nearing completion. Once they have the server for the new engine done well, it'll be a matter of programming the scripts (language for the script is C#) and making more models. I've been thinking along the lines of Human, Elf (wood elf and dark elf) fairy, catgirl, nymph, halfling, mermaid/merman and orc for the races. Also heavily faction based as well. Evil vs good, raids on cities by NPCs and quests similar to the way WoW, Everquest series and various other MMOs work. Also thinking PVP will be a big part of it as well. no PKing above or below 4 levels though and starts at level 25. Heh Heh Heh

Chastity was an illusionist, a mage/rogue ...I've never been able to play kataan well. I tried cleric but too boring. I liked stealing and the ability to as well as having the attack magic spells. I mostly just miss the people from NM and if we could form anything where all the old players would come back and join it would be neat to me.

Shadowmancer
Killer Clown
Had an avatar demonologist and a HM fisher first + monk.
Forgot what Killer Clown was, I think just plain old Kataan.
