The feds were alerted by the bank as soon as they found out the check was a fraud. I just mentioned the above so he wouldn't contact me.

Well, first off, this wasn't just sent to me by some random dude. It was originally a job I replied to on craigslist. Second off, some people probably get caught into it because they really, really, really need a job and fall victim because of their wishful thinking, which was me...almost.
