[Special 009: Voice] The inheritance of power

May 12, 2011 08:36

[To those who know her, or those attuned to it, Ami's voice seems to be struggling with its composure. The reason isn't evident at first; it's a straightforward question of the sort making the rounds lately.]I've been speaking with Hermione about magic in different worlds. We wondered who comes from worlds where magic power is hereditary, or from ( Read more... )

[Ami. Robert hasn't heard from her in a good week or so, and he's been worried... Afraid that the experiment had really hurt her, or something.

... And it figures that the Malnosso would kick her when she was down, if she had been. Aino Minako? Robert remembers her, vaguely, as one of Ami's very close friends - and the tremor in Ami's voice betrays that in a way that Robert can just about tell.

At first, he doesn't betray his own feelings, just answers.]

... My multiverse has no such thing as magic, as far as I was aware of.

... An experiment here in Luceti seemed to confirm this, if you would be... c-curious to hear of it, Doctor Mizuno...?

[Well, okay, "not betraying" isn't quite the right term for it. More like... not acknowledging out loud. The shake in his own voice says how he feels well enough, anyway. Says that he's sorry for being silent for the past week, for not making a better attempt to find her, for withdrawing into himself again like he used to do whenever he was terrified of everything. That he's sorry he won't be ( ... )

I'd like to hear about your experiences with it.

[She's a little skeptical hearing any world has no magic, despite including it in her inquiry; after all, only a very few people know her world has it. It could easily be secret.]

[As far as Robert knows, purely naturalistic explanations have always accounted for any sane, rational depictions of data in his universe. Luceti was extremely jarring in its first months - even now, Robert has to remind himself that he isn't hallucinating when he sees magic, that it's coming from another world whose physics differ enough within Luceti to allow it. Even now he has to struggle with the possibilities that magic offers, with the oddities it causes - it's why his ongoing thesis on paranormal physics is such a huge thing for him.]

Well, Mr. Sprensonne and I o-once got to discussing, and he showed me the summoning circles present in his world... As a researcher, I felt it prudent to attempt to... gain first-hand knowledge, so I opted to complete the circle using the symbol Mr. Sprensonne showed me. [Robert doesn't quite explain how yet, though he will if asked.] It turns out that I was actually able to use the spell, to a limited degree - but the effect was greatly reduced. While, normally - as Mr. Sprensonne informed me ( ... )

I see. In that case, however, many of us shouldn't be able to use the filial magic here, if our worlds back home don't allow for it. Yet each of us has been able to, that's wished to.

That would be the logical conclusion, yes - however, it seems that Luceti's own physics somehow supersede our own, to an extent. Otherwise, I presume we would all be affected differently by the Shifts and the like.

[Robert makes a mild considering noise.] I myself have not been able to contact any of the Filial Spirits yet, though that may simply be due to a lack of experience in the matter.

[He can't even meditate properly.]

I've contacted Nala, but... I rarely have time, so, I'm not very skilled with healing magic yet.

Mr. Sprensonne and Don have it in their minds to try to assist me in learning some sort of magic here...

[He smiles wryly; sadly.] I would have never thought it possible before this place, but Luceti... surprises me...

[It can be a negative surprise too, which is why Robert trails off a little, here.]

... It does make me wonder, about the extent of what is... possible.

Theoretically, there are infinite possible dimensions and alternate universes. We certainly see evidence of a great number just here. So, all of those possibilities might open up here where they meet.

Yes... multiversal theory predicts exactly that situation occurring. And Luceti does certainly seem to point to evidence of its truthfulness.

[Robert wonders if this is helping Ami at all, and whether he should say anything, ask anything, see if she's been feeling terrible beyond how she would obviously be feeling today...]

[She'd tell him she's fine.]

In that case, the possibility of you learning magic still exists as well.

[And for once, Robert wouldn't believe it. Not that he'd actively fight her on it, though...]

I... have certainly considered doing so... it seems like it might be a helpful skill to have here.

... [Quietly:] ... I should probably... try to be more useful, in the event of... an altercation...

[Hear that, Ami? That's Robert uncomfortably but tacitly accepting the presence of fighting in Luceti... Not that this hasn't come up before, but he doesn't sound quite so horrified as he has in the past.

The talks with Don and Mike have had an effect.]

Sometimes it's necessary.

[She'd been so very wrong to turn against her friends. But she has no real regret for the final battle against the Princess. They could only act by what they knew, and the princess had surely been about to destroy the planet - had destroyed it.

They'd had no way to know Usagi would come back to bring it back. But she's so very thankful for that.]

... Don and Mike have been... teaching me more about... fighting.

[He doesn't say "violence", though he wanted to.]

They say that... there can be ethics in fighting... [And he has to say this part with almost a shamed voice:] And... th-they had some... definitely logical points...

...

I... I don't know, but p-perhaps... p-perhaps I've...

[... Been wrong.

He's kind of afraid to think this way, though. So he goes to something more... normal.]

... If I l-learned to be a good doctor, like yourself and Doctor Faye-Ling, th-then I could... help people.

[He's seen too many people return hurt, or injured, and he wants to do something about it now.]

Like Sayo. She wanted to help everyone when she was drafted, so she learned medical techniques.

... Ah, I have... spoken to Ms. Sayo.

... She is a very kind and gentle person... I... I hope she was alright, then.

I still need to take a holophotograph of a rainbow for her, one day.
