CHARACTER
NAME: Chase Young
AGE: 1500-ish; looks 19 or 20
GENDER: Male
ROLE IN CANON: Antagonist
FANDOM: Xiaolin Showdown
FANDOM MEDIUM: Cartoon
TIMELINE PERIOD: Post-series

ABILITIES: Chase is, first and foremost, an incredible martial artist. Over the last 1,500 years, he has mastered as many styles of fighting as he possibly can, both unarmed and armed. He knows how to approach any battle and how to defeat nearly any enemy, having read the texts and having struggled to gain the brilliance of tacticians both ancient and modern. He has learned the arts of dark magic and is able to do a variety of things with them, ranging from scrying to transformations to raising the dead. However, he prefers not to use magic unless absolutely necessary; he'd rather fight a battle with his own two hands than manipulate forces typically beyond his control into doing it for him. He is also brilliant in general matters; having had so many years to live, Chase has taken to academic pursuits as much as martial ones. He has mastered languages, read thousands and thousands of books, visited empires before their fall to learn their works, and so much more. There is very little he has not applied himself to, relatively speaking, and he keeps up with current times and advancements fairly closely.

Aside from brilliance and martial prowess, Chase also has the ability to turn himself into a wingless dragon. He can't be adequately described as Eastern or Western; he's a twisted sort of parallel to most dragons, with an almost human-shaped body, able to stand and move like a human or run on all fours, with a thick, green-and-black-scaled torso and spines running from his skull to halfway down his back. He is not elegant or majestic like this; he's the antithesis of the nobility dragons stand for. This form is slightly more physically powerful than his human form, as well as more agile; however, it is also his true form. In order to keep himself from reverting to this form and turning into an insane, fully animalistic dragon, he must drink the Lao Mang Lon soup. That is what keeps him youthful, capable of becoming a human, and sane.

Power suppression being what it is, Chase will probably be unable to turn into a dragon. Once he finds out, fury will result.

CHARACTER HISTORY: (Most of this is collected conjecture, since we only get bits and pieces in the show; his turn to the side of eeeeevil is canonical, as well as everything past the arrival of Omi and the other monks.)

As a young man growing up on mainland China, Chase Young was raised in the Xiaolin Temple from age 8 onward and taught from the moment he began his training that he would be a Xiaolin Dragon - that is, a monk of extreme power and repute, charged with upholding the Good aspect of the world and battling Evil wherever it reared its ugly head. For most of his young adult life, he trained, believed in the principles, and fought against the dark Heylin magics, eventually defeating the Heylin witch Wuya alongside his fellow monks Dashi and Guan. Because this had been the main threat of his time, a short era of peace began in the land, leaving Chase and his friends to contemplate a lighter future.

However, Chase had never been quite as pure-minded as his companions, and when an even greater, but slightly less obvious, Heylin force arose in the form of Hannibal Roy Bean, things began to deteriorate again. Seeing that he was one of the most morally vulnerable monks at the temple as well as being one of the most powerful, Hannibal began tempting Chase with the ideals of evil. Chase wasn't easily swayed, however, and it took quite some time before Hannibal was able to plant strong seeds of dissent and unease in Chase's mind concerning the side of good. Eventually, he appealed to the vain, power-hungry side of Chase that was kept hidden - everyone's darker side is hidden, but in Chase's case, Hannibal saw the fears of being surpassed, growing old, and losing power all crushed into an ever-expanding ball buried under hours of fierce training and meditation.

Finally, Hannibal gave Chase a choice: he offered him the fabled Lao Mang Lon soup, which held within it a dark and terrible power - but what a power it would be. He told Chase to think about it, and that if he came to the decision to obtain greater power than any monk had ever held before, then he was to drink it. Chase deliberated for several long hours in solitude before finally giving and drinking the soup. The moment he finished it, the good part of his soul was torn away from him, lost forever to the annals of time, and he obtained unbelievable strength and martial power. However, because the soup was made from dragons, he obtained the form of a dragon - but one so horribly malformed as to become what could be considered his new personality taken form. With this new power, Chase, having submitted to the side of evil, razed the Xiaolin temple where he had trained for all of his life until then and battled his closest friends. Afterwards, when Hannibal tried to take control of the new evil, Chase locked him away in the Yin-Yang world, a world where souls slept, never to escape unless someone foolishly set him free.

After that, Chase began his conquest of the world, as most evil forces do. Now immortal, he had all the time he needed to do as he wished. Constantly at odds with his former friend Guan, Chase was eventually forced into a sort of hibernation - no longer could he take over the world, but instead was forced to simply sit in his lair, built in a nightmarish land of his own creation, and wait. That didn't stop him from going out and doing battle, what with the warriors of good constantly trying to defeat him. As yet, it is rumored that he has never been defeated - and all those who are defeated by him must swear their loyalty to him, and thus become part of his army.

Much later in his life, Chase came to realize that, in the not-so-far-off future, a certain warrior would become strong enough to do battle with him and defeat him. Unnerved by this realization, he began to seek out that warrior, hoping to find him while he was still in his youth and bring him over to the side of evil before it was too late. This warrior, Omi, was being trained at the re-built Xiaolin Temple as the Dragon of Water. For some time, Chase toyed with the four monks-in-training, focusing his tests and riddles on Omi to see if the boy would really be worth bringing over to his side. Many times, he allied with the Xiaolin forces, making Omi place trust in him - but also planting the seeds of evil in the Xiaolin warrior's conscience. Eventually, Chase pulled off an elaborate plan designed to force Omi to become evil - using the local evil force, Jack Spicer, as a pawn, Chase trapped Omi's teacher in the Yin-Yang world, requiring Omi to go in and find him. But because Omi was only armed with one of the two halves of the item required to enter the realm, he only came out with half of his self - his good half had been left behind, much like Chase's had been ripped away 1500 years prior. With Omi now under his command, Chase began to dominate the world once again ...

But as fate had it, Omi's good half was returned when the plan was realized by the other three monks, and even though Chase did manage to keep Omi as a warrior because the monk had sworn loyalty while under the dark influence, he lost to him in a battle and was forced to allow his return to the side of good. Since that day, Chase has continued to try and turn Omi to the side of evil - after all, the monk was still going to grow up and likely defeat him in battle - but so far, even with his constant taunts and pressures of evil, he has had very little success. Of course, he does still ally with the Xiaolin monks on occasion, but only when it comes to fighting utter world destruction or Hannibal Bean.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY: Being the epitome of the Heylin evil side, Chase Young has built up quite a reputation for being the most destructive and vile evil force in existence. As such, that's exactly what he is: evil. He prefers to use underhanded, traitorous methods to get what he wants or needs, and will not think twice about sinking to a level of trickery and using other people as pawns should that be an easy way to get somewhere. He's violent and quick to anger, which always result in a dangerously volatile person when combined. He manipulates anybody he can, tricks them if it's possible, switches out items, allies with them and then leaves them at the last second ... really, the list is endless.

One of the few things he will not do, however, is break his word as a warrior. Chase's honor code when it comes to battle is incredibly strict. He prefers fighting with his martial arts skills and those alone, and often will not do battle with others if they can't do the same or rely too heavily on a weapon to fight. If he makes a promise over a fight - to return something, to obtain loyalty, to let someone go - he will stick to that promise and force the opposing party to do the same. This is demonstrated multiple times in the series, where he has forced warriors who challenged him to swear their loyalty to him should they lose (his entire army of big cats is composed of warriors who made such deals and lost), and also when he returned the Spear of Guan to its original master and let the Xiaolin monks go free, instead of killing them all. This is, however, the only thing he will take as something not to be touched by underhanded forces, regardless of how simple it would be to crush someone after they have defeated him.

Aside from that, Chase is, alongside being evil, incredibly narcissistic and has an unbelievably large ego. His pride in being the greatest Heylin warrior in the land is currently unmatched. He enjoys the finer things in life and prefers elegance over unorganized chaos, although he can see the beauty in an utterly destroyed and burning village just as easily as seeing it in a moonlit waterfall. He focuses heavily on daily training and meditation, because despite turning to evil, he is still a warrior, and warriors have a code - one, as stated before, that he follows almost to the letter. His arrogance that has developed out of being so utterly unchallenged for a millennia and a half has led him to despise losing (it happens so rarely that he's practically afraid of it, now) to an extreme extent. Of course, he does admire other warriors who are strong enough to challenge him (and he does love a good challenge).

When aiming towards a particular goal, Chase is incredibly determined and will, as stated above, let nothing stand in his way of getting to said goal.

NURSE/DOCTOR/SECURITY/ASSISTANT/OTHER: Assistant

HOW IS THIS CHARACTER APPROPRIATE FOR THIS SETTING: While Xiaolin Showdown is not a particularly dark series or takes place in a dark world, Chase himself represents one of the most heinous evils that has ever graced that particular earth. It's not hard to take him into a situation like St. Edelweiss and have him adapt successfully. His general Evil Stereotype means that he's cruel to the last, willing to torment the patients as is all but required of the doctor's assistants and also ready to take delight in that fact, as well as simply pass the torture by as nothing more than necessary or not worth his time should he be confronted with the morality of it. Very little makes Chase flinch; a position of authority at St. Edelweiss, overseeing "therapy" and assisting it, as well as knowing full well what the institute does, would suit him quite well. He's not squeamish in the least.

WERE THIS CHARACTER A PATIENT, WHAT WOULD THEIR POTENTIAL DIAGNOSIS BE: Psychopathy with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Chase is a vain, proud, arrogant sonofabitch, and has zero empathy for anyone but himself. He regularly tries to conquer the world and turn it into a ball of fire and ash, so one can safely assume he's pretty crazy in that regard.

BEHAVIOR TOWARDS PATIENTS: With a natural superiority and near-xenophobia practically bred into his bones, Chase would see the patients as severely below him, hardly worthy of his time. He'll take no particular interest in them to begin with, only interacting with them to demonstrate his intelligence and ability, but as time goes on he'll likely become more integrated with them. Working alongside a doctor will force him to interact with the patients up-close and personally, and as their dramas unfold, he'll be inevitably sucked in as he works as the authority against them. While his cruelty and arrogance will overshadow every interaction he has with them, he won't object to occasional acts of generosity. These, though, will mostly be used to further his own goals, to manipulate patients against each other, and to gain information that he otherwise wouldn't be able to obtain ... or to just pass the time, given how easily he gets bored.

METHOD OF PATIENT TREATMENT: With so little desire to actually physically deal with patients outside what's required as an assistant, Chase's methods of treatment will likely align with the doctor he's assigned to. When left on his own and with no choice, however, he'll choose to teach the patients a Lesson: defeat them utterly, humiliate them, make them see their own follies, dig deep into their pasts and make them relive and realize horrible mistakes, make them feel stupid, and basically assert his dominance over them via more mental and psychological mindfuckery than physical torture. He sees them as insects, and he really does enjoy crushing insects.

PREDICTED BEHAVIOR/PLANS: First and foremost, Chase wants to get out and go back to taking over the world. But, as that's not possible, his main goal will be to obtain as much power and authority as he can. He'll want to get back all his suppressed powers and be given a better position than doctor's assistant, for which he will be willing to follow orders and do things people would normally consider below them. His behavior will be mostly superior, arrogant, and disdainful, telling chilling stories and demonstrating his ancient wisdom and knowledge in order to impress (but more likely irritate) everyone around him - patients and staff alike.
