This question is hypothetical, since I don't plan to have children! I'm quite fanatical in my view that education, healthcare etc should be provided by The State, hence I've ticked the comprehensive option.

I wouldn't actively push for a Grammer School (and certainly wouldn't pay for one) but if like me, they wanted to take the 11+ and passed then they'd have the choice which one they wanted to go to. Wouldn't be me chosing where to send them.

I ticked comp, but with a couple of caveats.

First, if all the comprehensives near me were abysmal, I would have to consider other options.

Second, if my child was either very bright or very dim, I doubt a mainstream school (whether state-run or not) would be a good choice.

I had to re-read it three times to make sure I could post a single word without a spelling mistake :->

I don't intend to have children, so my answers are also hypothetical.

I ticked both "Grammar if possible, then comp" and also "definitely comp" because what I really wanted to say was:

"Mixed-sex grammar school if possible, otherwise mixed-sex comprehensive school."

Because, all the grammar schools I've encountered are single-sex, and I have strong objections to single-sex schooling. If a grammar school did exist which wasn't single-sex - well, I don't know what it would be like, but there's a chance I might prefer it to a comp. I don't really know though, as I haven't had that experience.

What would you do if you had a child who decided they wanted to go to a single-sex grammar school?

Talk to them about my experiences with single-sex schooling as well as my generalised concerns from those experiences, and also listen to the reasons why they would like to go to a single-sex school.

So they would ultimately have the choice?
Just curious really so hope that doesn't sound aggressive. (I went to a single sex grammar school myself).

Agreed - I went to a single-sex grammar school and it was really not good for my social development.

Not all of them are single sex though - there was another one in my area that was mixed sex.

From the evidence, it seems the most sensible thing to do is to send all the boys to mixed schools and the girls to single-sex schools :-)

So, everyone should go to school with girls?

Maybe if everyone just wore skirts to school we'd all be ok :->
