5 ~ The Winter Flowers

Oct 10, 2010 21:00

I've been thinking about a story lately.

It's a story about promises and honor and I suppose it's also a story about generosity.  It was hard for me to connect with it at first because the rigid adherence to sworn oaths and sheer amount of lovesickness it contains seem rather ridiculous.  But perhaps if I'd been less careless with promises and ( Read more... )

What, in particular, do you like about it?

That something as worthy as honor can come from something as simple as truth. Most people don't realize that.

I hadn't really thought of it in terms of truth.

I'm surprised your reaction the the young man isn't more negative. He redeems himself, of course, but he spends his time courting a married woman and tricks her into agreeing to sleep with him. I wouldn't say the lady was fickle--but perhaps not good at being alone. She was careless, I think, and carelessness sows disorder in the world, but to me her actions make sense as something an actual person would do.

And yeah, I don't know about the knight. I'm not even sure whether he's meant to be all that admirable or not and I had trouble fleshing out his character. Perhaps he only makes sense as representing a certain philosophy?
For the most part, I don't think this is a story that makes honor sound all that attractive until the end.

Oh, well, it's not my story or even my favorite.

It's kind of hard to dislike a character who's that in love, even if he messes up amazingly. And I totally sympathize with the lady. The knight's the one who really bothers me, but maybe that's because you're right and he's just there to represent something.

I mean, I could be completely biased since the characters sort of remind me of another story that went down differently.

What're your favorite stories?

Well, I have a lot, but my favorite one is a Charterrean story about a mage who creates a simulacrum for company--it's actually fairly tragic story with a great many different versions. I think I'll give writing one of my own a try.

Most of my other favorites stories have happy endings. There's one about a girl who marries a mysterious northern prince which I like because it's one where curiosity is rewarded. And I was raised on many very silly stories about the twin brothers Aloard and Haloard who are constantly getting into ridiculous fights and other scrapes until their sister Halora comes to straighten things out.

I like it. It's got a whole karma thing to it.

Oh, I see what you mean. I think it's interesting that this is a story where no one ends up getting punished. I mean, no one does anything wrong in the end, but so many start or end with some sort of curse upon the wicked.
