I'm a permanent user, and though my homepage is set to my userinfo, occasionally I'll be directed to the main page when I'm logged out for one reason or another, and I see ads. For more on why this is messed up, see "permanent user

My guess is that the gender and age settings are tied to the profile, rather than the viewer. That is, if I were to logout and go look, it would still say gender=F&age=19.
Except that when I do, I don't see any ad at all.....
No, it wouldn't. They would use your own gender and age as specified on your profile to target the ad at you (in my case, they also used the language of my web browser to determine which ad to show me). Log in, see any profile, log out then go to the homepage. You'll see the ad (if you haven't blocked it or forbidden cookies).

Glad that (a) I normally never go to the home page, and (b) I normally use AdBlock or equivalent.
