[He should tell them.

He should.

Hal hasn't woken up yet, he hasn't woken up and Huey is worried sick.

But he can't tell them. No, Hal will be awake soon. Surely he will. So he bottles it up inside and fakes a cheerful - or at least calm - voice.Hal's not going to be online for a while. He's busy with something important. So if you have anything ( Read more... )

... Really? Say hey to him for me, okay?

[She's been hoping for a chance to see Otacon and Liquid both as soon as she gets to Ecruteak... y'know, for the sake of remembering the good ol' days.]

[She's tempted to ask what he's working on, but decides against it.]

Anyway, that's a sorta tough question.

I will! Don't worry about that.

[It's harder to lie to her, but... He'd rather she not be worried.]

I'm sure he'll be done soon.

[His voice is falsely cheerful.] Well, it's an important one too. In every team, there's the "hero" who leads and the "sidekicks" who support. Even outside of fiction, that's still the case in a lot of things.

[Yeah... she's got a lot to worry about right now, anyway. ... Not that it'll make it much easier on her when she next sees Otacon and he's suddenly older.]

[Fortunately, she looks like she buys the explanation.]

Hmn.

I dunno if I know, really...

[Heather's never been anything but the hero... it kind of happened when you were a loner in a tale like hers. Not that she'd ever had a choice... Alessa had been put on a painful pedestal long before she'd had any power to change that.]

[Having no idea of Otacon being older, he doesn't expect that to happen.]

Hm... Well, take your current group. What role do you perform in it? Are you the leader, or a follower?

Isn't everyone basically the hero of their own story?

Not really. They're the protagonist, but that's not the same thing.

Oh. [Ritz hums thoughtfully for a minute.] I'd still rather be the hero than a side character.

Hm... I see. Well, there's no right or wrong answers. Some people are just made to be heroes.

Most people try to be the hero, don't they?

[It's something he's seen a lot.]

Personally I'd rather be the sidekick for a while.

For a while? Are you used to playing the hero?

[A light chuckle.]

I didn't expect anyone to pick that answer.

I guess you could say that. Working with the law enforcement does a rather good job of casting you as one.

Hm... People are always prone to making heroes out of people, aren't they?

[More new voices on this stupid gadget. How many of these people are there here?]

I don't mind being in the supporting role.

[Ah, this is a new voice.]

True, but... which do you prefer? Or, optimally, which would you desire to be the most?

The very same. A hero has too many eyes on them at all times, too many distractions to deal with. I'd never get anything done if that were the case for me.

Then you think, a hero has to be the type of person that can deal with those distractions?

You want to be the one everyone looks up at with shining hopes?

That's a good way to look at it. But being a hero means you have to be able to endure a lot of suffering.
