Surprise (4/28 - 4/31) Out of Town

Apr 28, 2006 12:33

Friday afternoon and it was time for Kadaj's present, the one he'd given him the camera phone for.

Hoping he'll like the time away and especially where they're staying. Tim grabs his bag for the weekend and heads over to Kadaj's. He's got the Redbird, Kadaj will probably want to pack some stuff too and a car is better for holding everything than a ( Read more... )

Kadaj heard the door and when he didn't see anyone else getting up to get it, he snorted and put the distributor cap down to glare at Loz, Yazoo and Beka piled on the sofa, watching TV.

He opened the door and when he saw Tim, he smiled, opening the door further to invite Tim in. "Hey."

"Hey," he replies and with a quick look to the three on the couch leans forward to brush his mouth against Kadaj's, pulling back with a slight blush. He very carefully doesn't look back at the couch afterward.

"You remember that surprise I was talking about?" he asks, "The one I got you the picturephone for?" he grabs his hand, "Are you doing anything this weekend? Like, all weekend?"

"Work on Saturday for half a day," Kadaj said with shrug. "I can ditch it if I want to," and he looked back at his brothers. Not like they'd argue as often as they take off during the week.

He turned to Tim again and smiled. "You have something special in mind? Something I can use the phone for?"

"Did you know Wednesday was our three month anniversary?" he asks, "I thought we could go away for the weekend, just the two of us. And with the picturephone, you could take pictures so you're family doesn't worry about you. We've got reservations upstate, near Niagra Falls, if you want. It could be fun."

She was a weird bird and Kadaj found himself in turns smiling and backing up from her. He was almost worried she was going to hug him or something.

Soon they escaped to the outdoors and taking a walk along a path that circled around the lake. Not in any particular hurry, Kadaj reached out for Tim's hand and held it, thinking it felt like the most natural thing in the world to do.

He was silent, listening to the gentle sounds of nature and finding that he was missing something. Stopping in his tracks, he dropped Tim's hand to turn in tight circle, trying to place what seemed out of sorts.

When Kadaj stops, Tim stops also, looking around for what could have possibly set Kadaj off. He can't see anything, can't hear anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

"Kadaj," he whispers not wanting to make to much noise in case there's something or someone dangerous out there, "what is it?"

At first, he couldn't place what was off and he shook his head. As he stood there, the unease grew until he finally realized what was missing.

Standing there, in the middle of the wild things, Kadaj smiled and looked at Tim. "Do you hear it? There's no background noise. You know? The constant hum of the city, always in the background, you always hear it, cars moving, mechanical equipment humming...it's not there. It's...quiet."

Tim likes to think of himself as a city boy, prides himself on being Gotham born and raised, but compared to Kadaj, it's probably not true. He'd spent almost a year at Brentwood, in Gotham County, and he'd travelled during his training. Not to mention Wayne Manor was more than slightly out of the way of the city.

But he supposes it would be strange for Kadaj, if he'd lived in cities all his life, "Have you never been out of the City?" he asks, "Or, a City rather, back home? Where you came from."
