My number one tip is always lots lof brushing from root to tip, preferably twice a day. Boar bristle brush is best, but as long as you make sure you get the scalp any brush will do in my experience.
Perhaps you should try to wash you hair with baking soda and ACV more rarely, say, twicу a week, and the other times -- with mineral water? Perhaps the soda ammount is too high? I've been washing my hair with natural products for over two years now. I have long hair and I never washed it every day, and I I won't. I have had a go at washing it once a week, then half the week it was greasy, and I went back to washing it once in three-four-five days. Now I'm trying to switch to water only washing. The second week on, but on Saturday I washed it with clay, dairy product and apple juice.
Watch your reactions, which goes best for you and your hair, these things are individual. When I rarely wash(ed) my hair with the rye bread mixture with a little bit of 'kefir' or other dairy product -- it very often looks good and clean and has volume for two or three days. But that happens when I do it sometimes, not regularly.
The hardest thing about going no-poo is divesting yourself of the notion that, if you do more things, you'll get better results. I've noticed that the more you do with your hair, the more you have to keep it up. You're still stripping your hair of oils with baking soda. I'm not even convince that method isn't *worse* for your hair and scalp than regular shampoo. I haven't done anything to my hair in two years. Seriously, nothing. I put some essential oils on my scalp to keep it fom itching, but other than that, nada. I've actually found that my hair gets *dry* from time to time.
When I stopped using all cleansing products, I had to shower every day. I'd rub my scalp as if I were washing it. This would get the grease evenly distributed. Then I'd rub my hair down with a microfiber towel. This got the excess out without making my scalp think I needed to produce more grease. After a couple months, I was going a few days without showering. Now, I can go a couple weeks (shhhhh) without showering during the winter. I wish you luck in your
I use the baking soda like you described, every 2 days. I've been no pooing for about 7 months and I had the same problem at first. What type of bottle do you use for the shampoo? I started using one that's like a restaurant ketchup bottle with the point at the top, I've found them at supermarkets, on Amazon.com, and Bed, Bath & Beyond for about $2. I use about 1/2 cup of the baking soda liquid at each shower and make sure that I direct the tip of the bottle both to the front/top of my head and to my crown/nape area while rubbing with the other hand. Make sure you dig your fingertips in through your hair and rub your scalp vigorously back there. While you rinse, also rub your whole scalp vigorously with your fingertips. Hope this helps!
Thanks all! I switched to washing with baking soda only, then the next day no wash and the third day is a rinse in the shower. Then on the fourth day I wash with baking soda again with an ACV rinse. The ACV was making my hair too greasy so I'm going to only rinse every other washing. I've also bought a boar bristle brush and brush my hair more often. I've definitely noticed an improvement! Melissa - I use smart water bottles that hang out in my shower. Thanks for all your suggestions, they've helped a lot!
id also suggest leaving the baking soda in for less time, it could be overstripping your hair! I took it out of regime completely! I don't have overly greasy hair anymore since switching though.
