So I had a thought, as staysonpaper and I headed over to Goodwill. Why do they always give city streets the same boring names? Lincoln Street, Washington Boulevard, New York Avenue, Pine Court... Come on, city planners! How about "Ooga Booga triangle"?--at least something different, if not exactly interesting ( Read more... )

I told him I wished you were there. We were driving around trying to figure out how to get from one place that was closed to another place that was closed, and then from the second place that was closed to a place that turned out to be open, if across town, and Noah's doing math in his head about street names instead of giving me directions. "Oh, you were supposed to turn left back there." "Yeah, but you can't really USE 'square' that way..."

Which, of course, made me pretty gleeful. Hee.

BTW, I think I did the math wrong. Counting combinations as P(n,2) doesn't allow for repeats--like "Road Rd" or "Parkway Pkwy". We need those, oh yes.

So then the count becomes n^2. Darn. I was hoping for something with a longer formula. :(

Yeah, and I bet there are more types of streets, that I'm just not thinking of. Let's see. Can we use "expressway"? I still think "highway" would be ok to use. You can have named highways, after all. We won't mention the number designations for state, US and interstate highways. That would mar the perfection we're striving for. Hey, how about "turnpike" and "freeway"? Or "tunnel"? Or even "causeway", and "bridge"?

Bridge Tunnel? Tunnel Expressway?

I think this could (d)evolve further. Overpass, underpass, junction. Park, cemetery, preserve, fountain, station, depot...

"Meet me at Park Preserve, we'll walk down to Station Depot, hop a train, and visit Cemetery Fountain, over in Fountain Cemetery..."

In my hometown we have High Street Road, which later just turns into High Street. It's very important to include the Road, because the numbers start over when it loses the "Road". Utter madness!
