Wow, sounds like a fun session. 4e combat is a blast, but it always helps to have interesting stuff between the fighting. :-)

The party headed for Drugen, and managed to provide some security for a large train of wagons carrying grain. This netted them some cash. They all looked a little disappointed though when I did not spring an encounter on them. Noted.

This part struck me as funny, for some reason. :-)

So how did the players use the game system outside of combat?

Excellent query, Matthew, let me address it in its very own blog post, which I'll get right to work on.

I play the Warlord in the campaign. I would say the sessions like last week are good for a pause in combat but can be difficult pace when we've cruised through 4 encounters a session before. The pace is different, and that slowed pace was difficult to get out of lethargy for the players at the beginning, course it doesnt help that it gets warm in the house with 7 people at the table and we all just ate lunch. However, it provided plenty of time to do more then hack and slash, so points to the DM. Two party members quickly got side quests, two party members used skills that you do not often use in hack n slash days, diplomacy, Streetwise, and thievery for example. You just do not really use those when you are sticking orcs in the belly.

All in all, I'd say the first 2 hours of our session felt slow, but the drama built enough and made the last 3 hours great, especially when the players found out it was not a kidnapping/slavery ring but a murderous cult.
