Everything you need to know about the Tall, Dark, and Spooky history teacher.
Hellsing
Hellsing is an on-going manga series by Kouta Hirano. It's also the name of Britain's secret vampire hunting organization and of the family who run it. They've been around since the late nineteenth century. Hint, hint, hint....
Alucard in Hellsing
Alucard is a vampire who, for lack of a better word, belongs to the Hellsing family. 'Indentured Servant' is the best term I can come up with. Read his name backwards, and it's not hard to figure out his original identity. And, although, Stoker's Dracula exists in the Hellsing universe, Alucard is based equally on the historical figure of Vlad Tepes.
There's not much more that need be said about Alucard apart from the fact that, thanks to a century's worth of Hellsing's experiments to 'perfect' him, he no longer works like your average vampire. The traditional cross, holy water, stake through the heart, chop off his head and stuff his mouth with garlic thing? Doesn't work. Even a little. He can walk around in the sunlight, come into a building with out being invited, and enjoy a good glass of wine.
In addition to eliminating most of Alucard's vulnerabilities, Hellsing's experiments also heightened whatever vampire-type powers he possessed. In particular, the whole shape changing thing, enough so that Alucard says that his form no longer means anything to him. He can change his appearance right down to switching genders, and he can take on other, less human, forms. These are very creepy and quite deadly, all bugs, shadows, glowing red eyes, and very sharp teeth.
Also, he has an undead horde. No, I'm not making that up. It seems that, at his most powerful, Alucard is able to resurrect the souls of his enemies to obey his command. It's never very well explained in Hellsing canon, but they're sort of like that army of ghosts from Return of the King. Only less personable. Most of them were destroyed in a Big Ass Fight, and I only bring it up because the fact that Alucard can do this will be relevant when I start explaining his npcs.
Alucard in Fandom High
This section will be very short as Alucard wasn't a character in FH so much as he had a cameo or two, but I figured it was a good idea to point out that I'm taking him from this context rather than pulling him straight from the manga.
Alucard in Milieux a.k.a. J.H. Blenner
So, how do you make a history teacher out of a centuries old, scientifically modified vampire? You nuke London. The RPG equivalent of swatting a fly with a Buick, you might say, but I've made my peace with it.
Y'see, the Big Ass Fight is a battle in London between Hellsing, the Vatican's Iscariot Section XIII, and the Letzte Battalion. Who are undead Nazis. I know, I know...
Anyhow, waiting in the wings is Sir Hugh Islands who's prepared to drop nuclear missiles on the city should it look like London is truly doomed. And, in my story? He does. Nukes fall and everyone dies. Except Alucard. For the aforementioned omgwtfpowerful no real body-type reasons. Of course, that's not to say it wasn't really, really, really painful. On a number of levels. But, at the end of the day, he's survived, while everyone else is dead. Which, really, has been the story of his life, up to this point.
But, now, seven or so years later he's back and no longer bound to Hellsing. He's got a spiffy new identity of the really well-crafted sort that MI: 6 can cook up when the Queen gives them that look, and he's in Milieux, ready to teach you history. ^_^
The NPCs
Lucy
Lucy gets no mention in actual Hellsing canon, but I've always kind of liked the character and thought it would be fun to drag her in from the Stokerverse. She's also where the 'Undead Horde' thing that I mentioned earlier comes in. Lucy works very much the way the Horde does in that she's solid and real, has a mind of her own, and is fairly autonomous once summoned. However, she's also still very much a part of Alucard -- his memories and whatever part of her that drinking her blood gave him. She's a bit like a ghost, only tangible.
Personality-wise, Lucy is bright, pleasant, flirtatious, has remarkable posture, poise and killer diction. She was raised to be the lady in charge of a wealthy household and is thus quite a competent assistant.
The Brides
I've also dragged the Brides in from Stoker's novel. They work the same way Lucy does. I'm not quite sure what I'll do with them just yet, if I'll use them for plotty purposes or just have them sing the occasional number at All Souls. We'll see.
Coffin
Coffin is part of Hellsing's canon. He's Alucard's last domain, and he's fairly self explanatory. He's a walking box with legs and attitude. And kung fu action grip. If Terry Pratchett and Tim Burton had a love child? It would be Coffin. We love Coffin.
And, that about covers it, I believe. If you've got a character who's good at sensing such things, by all means have him or her twig on to the fact that Blenner and/or Lucy aren't quite human. But, I'd sort of hoped to have my boy be incognito for a little while. So, not shouting OMGDRACULA! would be much appreciated. ^_~
