Hmm I can see where u r coming from. It isnt a great movie, but i think very few can compare to Brick. I think i enjoyed it more for the sheer whacky collection characters and totally missed the whole emotional bit. Every emotional scene seems to end w/ some sort of eye-winking or a hint that the last tear jerkin moment might be a con of some sort. It de-emphasize itself.
Still i had some great laughs during the Rachel Weisz comedy gags and I luv the whacky meaningless characters. Its no great movie, but it felt like Rian johnson was telling me some sort of fairytale.
I'm glad to hear that. I think it's kind of funny how many people have taken up a Wes Anderson blacklash banner, and how many people I know who've taken up that banner are super in love with this movie.
That said, I'm glad to hear it straight from you, I'm not gonna see this. Poorly played, Rian Johnson.
As far as comic fable and emotional impact, they both worked for the people I saw it with. I think there's a tonal shift by the third act that's a little unexpected but it doesn't upset the film. I never felt pushed into having to like either Stephen or Bloom.
And I want more movies with Rachel Weisz being bubbly. And wearing hats. Must wear more hats in her movies.
Maybe I haven't seen many Wes Anderson movies but I saw no parody. Then again after The Life Aquatic..., I have no desire to watch much of any of his films. I don't find his work funny.
I enjoyed the film greatly and am happy to see Rian Johnson trying something different from his first film (and with his next being sci-fi).
