Well.

That didn't make a goddamn bit of sense.

MOVING ON.

(Spoilers in the comments, doubtless.)

what *I* wanted to know is, if it's NYC in 1940 that's a problem for the doctor, why don't amy and rory just hitchhike to California or something? then he can go pick them up...?

I think that at the end of the day, Moffat only has one Female Character Template in his drawer. It's not even that terrible of a template; the problem is that every female character he writes is essentially the same woman, just on a different part of this one journey he has fixed in his brain ( ... )

NYSSA IS AWESOME. We need to get you into the Davison era (and the tail end of the Baker era) so you can love her, too. She did the whole 'my planet/people are destroyed and I'm the only one left' thing before it was cool. She's a scientist, so she has the whole logical, rational thing down, and it nicely balanced out Tegan (who was more brash and outspoken) and Adric (who was young and tended towards whininess at times), and complimented the Doctor, who was also more introverted.

Man. First female cat I get is going to be named Nyssa, for reals.

Even though Moffat can't keep his continuity for weeping angels straight worth a damn (slap some chains on that sucker and that will make it almost immobile), I was still bawling like an inbred lunatic.

I still don't completely understand why he can't just visit them? Although I am on the "he's been plucking them up whenever he can from random spots in time to have last adventures with them" boat.

I expect he can, really. I mean, if New York is the problem, land in New Jersey and take the effing train, you know? There are plenty of ways to handwave his statement about not being able to see them again (not least of all because a major theme of the episode was 'the Doctor's Rules About Time are totally breakable'), and I'm sure they'll be employed next time Karen and Arthur feel like making a return to the show (isn't the 50th anniversary coming up?).

So I'm officially late in commenting on this post, but I just wanted to congratulate you for capturing the essence of that episode so eloquently. -_- C'mon Moffat, really?

I'm working on a more indepth post in which I compare Moffat's Who to Looney Tunes. IN A BAD WAY.
