Why I resigned from AAR, LLC.

Jul 21, 2010 12:52

I've told this in person, in bits in pieces, to a lot of people, and posted a bit onto a couple Flipside lists, but I don't know if I ever put down the full story, and I feel like clarifying where I stand on things, especially in light of some of the drama going down right now ( Read more... )

I agree with you about those who want to try and relive previous years. One of the best and hardest lessons I've had to learn was that no matter how great some past moments of ones life have been, those moments have passed and can never be relived ( ... )

For me it's less who the LLC is and more about how the power structure has gotten fubar'd in several ways. Rangers need a serious overhaul, the list situation was ridiculous this year, exceptions for some- based on seemingly random or personal bias decisions, people forgetting why rules like GTFO were made and just trying to clean sweep people out who -wanted- to volunteer for post-op(when Lurko REALLY needed the help and couldn't due to bs by someone NOT on the LLC etc ( ... )

My issue with the LLC is the intense closed off secrecy. Before, all of the cc and surrounding Lead type folks knew what the hell was going on. We were invested in the event and were kept informed because all of our opinions mattered to the LLC. What happened there? Before when? Before the CC was created? You know why the CC was created? Because the LLC was getting slammed for not being transparent enough ( ... )

I didn't want you to gnash teeth about it, just bringing it up as an unfortunate example of how what I'm saying isn't crazy. I'm not the only one feeling this. If so many people are having problems with how things are going- maybe there's a problem. Or a lot of them ( ... )

I know you have some good points to make. I'm sorry if I've been focusing on the parts I disagree with.

I do think you're being heard, but I'll double check when I have a chance.

"Volunteering - which includes the LLC - is supposed to be fun. If it's not, you should stop doing it."

damn right.

Ya know I don't know dick about anything, and I've had issues with the collective entity known in some circles as 'The Shadowy Board of Shadowy Figures', but I appreciate the work you've put in. I also enjoy drinking with you. I wish the best to you.

Let's go back to having fun! We don't need a yearly event to do that. We can pretty do that any time. It's much easier and less stressful to all when there ain't rules about such and this and what and etc.

I agree about the less stressful. I would say, though, that having the big event is a nice way to bring people together.

I try to downplay the idea that Flipside is the most important thing in the world, but if it wasn't for Flipside, you and I probably wouldn't have met. On the other hand, we probably would have both met other people that are almost as much fun to hang out with.

Well, yeah, I wouldn't have even probably moved down to Austin and for a long while I attributed the burn scene with literally saving my life (I was in a pretty bad place for a long time and it just so happened to come along and show me how to have fun again!) So, I am and will always be eternally grateful to everyone that's had a hand in making it go.

But when it stops being fun and feels more like an obligation, like it kinda did for me (and I wasn't even doing anything!) I felt it was better to bond / connect with those closest to me for a while.

Or maybe it's just cause I constantly switch from extrovert to introvert at the drop of a hat.

I don't know so I'll just be quiet now and listen and learn. But again, thank you for all the hard work, and I do look forward to drinking some beers and what-not, under whatever context or event or place that occurs.

You bring up several points that I've been noodling around with and I touch on this in a response somewhere somewhere else. I don't know, take these thoughts, leave them, make a straw man out 'em and torch it ( ... )

I hear a lot about this "shouting down" business. I'll try to keep an eye out for it and stop it when it happens - especially if I'm doing it ( ... )

I'm not actually trying to be a snot; but until someone finishes speaking, you have no idea what they are going to say.

That's a very good point, and one I need to remind myself. (Although, I often have a pretty good guess what they're going to say, I'm wrong often enough to shut up and listen.)

I'm thinking specifically about the woman who asked "If there's so much liability, why is being considered?" Did she ever come back to another meeting? I might be reading too much into that occurence.I don't remember that particular incident, so I don't know if she's coming back ( ... )
